Good Scope recommendation for around $200 for a .30-30

Just picked up a Marlin 336C, now I need to scope it. What my preference is, is something for short range, just to gather light for late evening hunting. I cannot see a front sight right at dusk. Not wanting a high power, just lots of light gathering.
 
For that price, you might try a Leupold VX1 in 2-7X33. Runs $179 before tax/shipping most places. I've been thinking about putting the same scope on my Marlin 336.

I believe that Leupold is now multi-coating the VX1 line. Should make for better light transmission.
 
Personally, I would shop the evilBay or elsewhere for a good used Burris or Leupold fixed power 4X with 20mm objective.

I scored a practically new Burris 4x compact on the Bay for $100 awhile back.

Tough, compact scopes with good glass that won't burden a trim, light and handy rifle. Lifetime warranty means either can be fixed for free as long as Burris and Leupold are in business.

LAK has a point. A friend of mine who is much into wheeling and dealing at shows and ebay says the old Bushnell Scopechief scopes are good glass and a good buy. Even Tasco can be decent, if you turn up one made in Japan instead of China or other cheapo subcontracting nation.
 
I'm currently the high bidder on a LNIB (unmounted) Leopold M8 fixed 4x on ebay. the high bid (mine) is $136 and change, $8 shipping.

I didn't check if it is long eye relief so I may have one available soon. Or, feel free to outbid me. :D
 
Yep, not long-eye relief. So it won't work with either of my rifles.

Only one thing to do.

Buy a new rifle. :D

At any rate, if I end up winning it I'll sell it for $150 plus shipping (mailing) if anyone can actually use it.
 
I have routinely seen circa 4X Leupold and Burris scopes fall under the hammer on the evilBay in the $120 to $150 range.

My find was somewhat fortunate; a "buy it now" @ $100. And that is exactly what I did.

Sometimes it pays to get on there in the early hours when most folk are asleep and run something like "scope (brand name)" in the advanced search. Then again with "riflescope (brand)".

While I am not necessarily recommending it, I had a cheapo Wally World BSA Classic 4x on my Marlin 336 for a couple of years, and it worked flawlessly, consistent 1-inch groups at 100 yards out of this rifle with factory soft point ammo, amazing. Then I found a scratched up Leupold M8 4X at a pawn shop for $60, so I have now swapped the scopes out. This is a hunting rifle, not a show piece, so it is results, not looks that count. I think recommendations for a good fixed power scope for a .30-.30 are right on, very consistent with the range capabilities of this rifle. Looking forward to trying the new Hornday .30-.30 loads with the pointed polymer tips, that could stretch the practical range of the rifle out another 50 to 60 yards.
 
I've had great luck with three different Bushnell scopes over the years. I had a Sportview 4X on my .30-.30, a Buckhorn (I think that's the trade name) 3-9X on my 30.06 and another Sportview on a .308. All good scopes, used in all kinds of conditions and never had a fogging problem, or had one of them knocked off zero, despite heavy usage.

For the price, they are good scopes.
 
Leupold FXII IER 2.5x28 scout scope - can be had for less than two bills, worth every penny.

Bushnell firefly

I use a BLR in 358 Win for black bear. The new Bushnell Fierfly in 3x9x40 is great for those late dusk shots on a dark target.Around $199 at Cabelas
