I'm new to sharpening knives and hatchets, so what are some good sharpeners for shop and field use and also what sharpening methods do people like best?
I tried the Lansky system and found it awkward to use, I get a better edge freehand than using the contraption, on the other hand, their stones that go with the system are very nice. I use those for freehand, the ceramic stone is really nice in there.
If your good at free hand here's the best one I have ever found. Here's the system I use and finish with a good strop on the leather You can shave with your knife when your done.
Thanks for the suggestions. I looked at the Gatco and Lansky systems, and it looks very awkward to use and too many parts. I can see myself losing parts in the field.
The Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker looks promising as it has less parts.
I really was hoping I could find a good whetstone that would handle all my sharpening needs. That might be asking too much since I have serrated blades also.
Baldy, could I do serrated edges with the 8" DMT DuoSharp you recommended? Which of the sets do you have? The Website states "The fine/coarse or the fine/extra coarse stones are great stones to own if you're going to own just one stone."
The problem with the Sharpmaker is it only does 15 degree and 20 degree angles. Both of those are real common; but if your knife uses something different, you are going to be working a long time to raise a burr with the Sharpmaker's included stone. You can buy a coarser and finer rod to supplement the Sharpmaker; but then you start hitting the cost of more capable sharpeners.
On hatchets, I have an Estwing and just use a 600 grit diamond stone and freehand it doing my best to match the existing angle. That is working well for me right now.
Yes out of the sharpeners I've tried - Sharpmaker included - the Wicked Edge system is by far the best and easiet to use. Of course it costs WAY more that the others talked about here but I'm very happy with mine.
