First was 9mmMike's new old Wingmaster, then Gohon's. Now It's my turn. Friday after Thanksgiving I took two out-of-town cousins shopping for turquoise jewelry ( :barf: ), but at the end of the trip we were close to a gun shop that usually has a pretty good selection of used pieces. There were several this time, but the one I couldn't put down was a sweet, older Wingmaster. It's a 1967 according to Remington, with a plain 28" tube with a fixed Modified choke. It's obviously been well used and well cared for. It's nicely broken in (buttery smooth), and the original finish has faded to a beautiful dark gray-brown. The wood is excellent. The recoil pad's a little hard, but 37 years'll do that. Inexplicably, it was priced well below other, newer used Express models with the cheaper plastic parts. ($169!!) The only reason I can figure is that it's a 2 3/4" and doesn't have choke tubes. So what, I say! :D

You got a nice deal, and your great grandchildren yet unborn will thank you for it.

Except for waterfowling and maybe turkey, you've got an all around field gun with some application for trap and so on. Judicious load selection will give you patterns from nominal IC to Nominal Full with that Modified choke.

Recoil pads are easy to replace. They come in various thicknesses so you can get the fit a little closer to optimum.

Now go shoot it....

Congratulations, but I'm going to have to push you down to #4 for newly acquired old Wingmasters. :D

Second week of November I picked up a 1950 Wingmaster with a 30" full choke tube. Last week of November I picked up an very clean 20" 1968 rifle sighted smooth bore tube for it. Paid $175 for the gun and $75 for the barrel. I'll probably pick up a 1 or 2 shot extension from Wilsons for it and a good sling and call it set.

Going to try to hit the range today for some patterns. I think my back is up to it if I keep the session short.

I've hemmed and hawed over picking up an 870 and was tickeled with this old Wingmaster fell in my lap. Kinda neat seeing how little the 870 has changed from the 1st model year to what I see selling in shops today.

‘Tis the season! Congratulations! Post a pic if you get a chance. I just love the looks of these old guns. I will be dropping off my 28†plain, fixed-choke barrel this weekend for the forcing cone job. I know they’re gonna chuckle when they see the condition of this barrel bluing (or lack thereof) but I’ll worry about looks later.
This will bring my investment to 140.00 for my ’55.
870’s rock.
Good luck with yours.
Mike

You're going to have fun shooting that gun. As I mentioned in the other thread, the old Wingmasters like you have, that have mod stamped on them will mic out to be between mod and full, which I guess would be a improved modified choke. Shooting Nitro-27 #8's in mine throws a full pattern at 40 yards so don't rule out those turkey and ducks until you pattern it. The guy next to me has over 100 pecan trees and I've been helping him thin crows this year and the old 870 is smoking them at 40+ yards. have fun.......
