Hey there, i was wondering if anyone knew of a good trap shooting shotgun for under $400-$500. I am new to trap, and am considering making a team with some friends, so i need a better shotgun.

Thanks for the help,

gvn

A standard Rem 870 Express will run you less than $400 and will last a lifetime. A better choice would be the 870 Wingmaster Classic Trap, but that's going to cost twice as much.

Well, maybe if he doesn't find a local buyer he might consider shipping. You'd just need to find an FFL on your end to handle the transfer.

An 870 Express will do. So will a used 870 trap model, TA, TB, etc. These are going for about what an Express will cost if you look around.

If I were setting up an 870 for trap, I'd go with a 30" barrel, add a few oz of weight to the stock and mag tube and shim the stock to put POI about 60-40.

Full choke is traditional for trap, but Mod will break a few more birds starting out.

HTH....

look around for a used BT-99. unless you're planning on shooting doubles it is hard to beat.

Mike's Gun shop in Frankfort will give you a good deal on something you'll enjoy owning. Get yourself something nice to look at. You'll enjoy trap shooting more.

I just picked up an Ithaca 37T [AA 8656930] in nice shape [a little blue ware, and a couple scratches] for $376 shipped.....61 year old classic Trap gun....They are out there if you look...

Some possibilities are:
1. Used BT99 (unless you want to shoot doubles).
2. Used 870 TB or TC.
3. Used 1100 trap model. These used to be pretty popular and there should be plenty of used ones around.
When looking at used trap guns, try to avoid those that have been shot into junk or been subjected to a lot a amateur gunsmithing. Stay away from release triggers, at least at this stage in your career.

They will all work if you do your part. I started with a Mossberg 500, now use an O/U. I guy at my club break a lot of Clays with a 20 year old 870.

A new guy just came in with a Remmington SPR 100. Neat looking gun. Single shot, break action. $250 @ Wally World. He Shot 20,22 & 23. Ilike the look of the gun, not hte feel, but he could shoot it.

Good Luck, Trap is a blast.

It's been awhile since I shot trap at a range but for that I'd say modified. For hand thrown I like to use full. Hand throwns are flying slower so I can wait longer and make sure I'm on. Even when the are way out there I can still break them using the remington 870 and it's full choke tube.

Full is traditional for trap, and there's still a case for it. The tighter pattern will be less forgiving and that will teach you to get on them tighter.

In your shoes, I'd start off with Modified, and tighten it up once I was hitting 20/25 or so.
