Goose hunters, need some info please.

Going on my first goose hunt this weekend and after watching some videos on what to expect I noticed a lot of wounded birds. This is obviously unavoidable due to the nature of the hunt. My question is, is there a proper way to kill a goose that's been wounded? Break the necks maybe? Is there a proper technique that should be use to end it quickly or just get in there and start twisting?

uuuuhhh .... Are you carrying a gun at the time? I usually just shoot them however many times it takes (usually one far and one near). I probably wouldn't think of any anti-goose martial arts techniques ... too yucky for me.

Maybe I am just a pansy, though :)

Shoot them and if they are alive when you get them in your hand wring their neck. A couple of quick twists usually does the job.


Where is goose season open at? We can't even get a stamp for another month and a 1/2?
 
Cripples aren't unavoidable. My group of guys has dropped about 40 birds so far this season, and we only had one cripple. It would have died in a few minutes anyway, but we did the sporting thing and dispatched it quickly.

The other 39? Dead before they hit the ground.

Wait until they are well within range and place your shots carefully. Any group that has a lot of cripples is either skybusting or needs to spend some time on the skeet field.

Not to mention that a goose can do a number on a dog, its a big bird and fitting for its life.
 
Wringing the neck costs nothing. Steel shot is expensive enough and if you're using hevishot, hell, I ain't in that income bracket. :D

I use a 10 gauge with steel Ts, greatly reduces cripples. :D BB steel is iffy past 35 or 40 yards in my experience. Now, I've not tried fasteel BBs. This could help a lot, sure does on ducks with 2 or 3 shot. :D The 10 ain't broke, though.
 
I killed geese with 2 shot from a high brass 16 gauge. It was lead, of course. Didn't need no buckshot or even BB. Was pass shooting, too. Steel sux. Got to go to T to get real performance and you can only toss enough of that from a 10 or 3.5" 12 gauge. I'm not sure steel shot doesn't cripple and lose more birds, especially ducks, than it saves from any possible lead poisoning. I've often wondered about that. But, you'll never see non-toxic shot requirements removed. It's a PC thing to do. :rolleyes:

At least fasteel has been an improvement that helps me cope with the rules. Tungsten is no answer for me, too expensive. I've often wondered if that was the real goal of the game managers, end waterfowl hunting by making it too expensive for the average working class guy.
