and they're letting Ron Paul in! that should make it interesting. maybe the first debate I'll watch since 2000.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0407/3390.html

Accepting former first lady Nancy Reagan's invitation are
Sen. Sam Brownback (Kan.),
former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore,
former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani,
former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee,
Rep. Duncan Hunter (Calif.),
Sen. John McCain (Ariz.),
Rep. Ron Paul (Texas),
former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and
former Wisconsin governor Tommy G. Thompson.

I don't see Tancredo in there and I certainly don't blame Fred Thompson for waiting for the right moment to toss his hat into the ring.

Curious they have some of the big boys on stage with the regular people. Missing about 2/3 of the repub field though. Probably a good thing will keep the din down.

After watching Ron Paul on Bill Maher stating that he would get rid of the CIA, I think that any right minded person would simply move along.

You are absolutely right. The cia needs to go away as soon as possible.

If they couldn't figure out 911 with a two year head start, can't figure out who sent all the anthrax when they have the stuff, couldn't stop all the attacks on the military pre 911, get us involved in many stupid wars, what good are they?

He said he was for intelligence gathering but opposed to overthrowing governments and assassinating elected leaders. You would think a policy like that would be an easy sell when you consider that the current policy lead to a theocracy in iran and al queda in afghanistan. And then there are the various adventures in southeast asia and central america.

No, he flat out said that he would like to get rid of the CIA. The clip is on youtube.

Normally thats just loopy. In todays cliamte thats clinically insane.

The good news is that Ron Paul will protect our gun rights untill the nation no longer exists. The bad news is that will happen sometime next week.

Since I'm right handed and right eye dominate, I'm NOT in my right mind. :neener:

I still think Ron Paul is the best candidate at this point in time. He actually understand the Constitution and the limits placed on the power of the federal government, unlike the majority of the yahoos who have run or held the office in the past 100 years or so.

Linky?

You admitted earlier that you don't even really know what the cia does or does not do. Based on results tendered so far I don't see my tax dollars as being well invested.

Why do we need the cia? What are they doing for us? Running secret prisons? Not getting the intel until after the bomb goes off, communisim collapses or the twin towers fall? Sure it is easy for me to poke at their failures, but the failures were huge...

Unfortunetly the CIA is a highly politicized organization, which impedes its effectiveness.

I kind of picked up on that. My next door niehbor in VA worked for the cia for 15 years and state for 10. Great lady. She didn't really talk much about the job but she did hate the politics.

Intelligence as we have seen time and again over the past 40 years can be manipulated to mean whatever, whoever is in charge wants it to mean. This dilutes and pollutes the strength of the intelligence.

But you're making that decision with probably 1% of the facts. If I told you that the CIA stopped the last 99 9/11 style attacks would you still be so quick to get rid of them?

My entire point here is that no one here really knows how effective the CIA is, Paul included. As a result its completely rash to suggest a course of action (get rid of them) when we don't know the severity of the problem, or if there even is one.

I think you may have missed the part where Paul was starting to explain what he meant by "I think there should be intelligence gathering" and that schmuck Maher cut him off again.

Someone being cut off doesn't mean that their answer was invalid.

Maher asked him to clarify and he did. His idea is to dismantle the CIA and leave intelligence gathering to the DoD.

Theres a reason why the OSS was created during WWII. Factor in the amounts of information and complexity of today and letting the military handle intelligence and information is suicide.

He clarified to a point before Maher cut him off. Bill Maher (while I am a fan of his show) treated Dr. Paul like Rush Limbaugh treats people he doesn't agree with.

A bit OT, but I don't think that the CIA or the ATF for that matter, are constitutional government agencies. I would like to see the ATF gone, and the CIA greatly renovated; but I wouldn't lose any sleep if both of them were demolished.

STAGE 2: But you're making that decision with probably 1% of the facts.
Quite true. I was assigned to MI during my Army days. What we read/hear ain’t even close to the facts! Been there, done that. The majority of what is (or was during my time and I doubt that it has changed) told is disinformation to take the spotlight off of the real happenings.
