Typical gun show, tables full of used guns going for MSRP... Forget the Smiths. There was a table with nothing, but old Colt DAs and I guess he thought they had some collector value or something, cause I coulda bought a new Smith for what some of those old worn out POSs were going for.

Anyway, I looked everything over twice or three times and there was one gun, a 3" Taurus M66 blued, older gun because it has the hammer block instead of the transfer bar. It had a bit of holster wear, but was reasonably tight. I cycled it and it has a slight timing issue on one cylinder that won't affect function, but doesn't quite hit the latch when you cycle it slow. It should shoot fine, though, and if it don't, I might try that Taurus lifetime warranty out, but normal dry firing, it goes into battery just fine.

So, I asked the guy how much? He looked at it, says $200 plus tax. I showed him the timing issue, mentioned the holster wear, and a tiny little bit of end shake in the cylinder and said I'd go $180. He thought a minute, said okay. That little end shake ain't enough to be able to tighten, actually. It's less than .001" and they don't sell shims that small, so I'm not worried about it, but it made for a good bargaining point, LOL!

I bought a 4" nickeled M66 at a gun show some time back for $197, so this isn't the killer deal that one was. That gun is amazingly accurate, perfectly timed, tight, like new, and of recent enough manufacture that it has the transfer bar system. I'm thinking the timing probably was the way it is on this 3" from the factory.

The gun has a smooth DA trigger, but no better than my newer M66. I'd say it's not quite as smooth as my old Smith M10. I like the balance and it's fairly light with that 3" tube. It fits my IWB I made for my M85UL and feels lighter than my Ruger P90 on the hip and also tucks in better under just a loose T shirt. I think I can tote this thing IWB in the summer pretty easily.

I mean, I'd rather have a M19, but the older Smiths they had there must have been made out of Platinum or something because they all had new gun prices on 'em. Taurus isn't as popular, but hey, they work and I like the two I have already, so I went for it. It fit my budget anyway, if nothing else. I'd been thinking a lot about getting a 3" K frame .357 for a carry option. I have the P90, but it's chunky for summertime. My other carry options are pocket sized, the 9mm Kel Tec, my Grendel P12 .380, and my little M85UL .38 snubby. So, this gun sort of fills one of my few empty niches. I'd been thinking about another M971 Rossi due to their smaller size. They're about half way between J and K frame in size. But, this Taurus ain't as heavy as my 4" gun and seems to ride well on the hip. It's a good alternative in my mind to the 3" SP101 I was thinking about, too, due to the adjustable sights I prefer.

I own a Model 65 (fixed sights). I bought it new in the early 80's- my first 357 mag. I've shot the fooey out of it over the years. I kept when I was selling evrything I owned to pay rent. I'll never let it go. I think you got a fine revolver there.

Thanks. I've warmed up to it just dry firing and playing with it. Going to the range today to try it. I know it's had a good round count put through it because the molded checkering on the Pachmayr grip is smoothed on the back where the hand takes the recoil. That tells me it's been pounding someone's hand a lot. But, it's amazingly tight, not much looser than my newer M66 that has had a light round count.

I'll see how it shoots today. Weather ain't exactly great, but I can't wait on the range time with this thing. :D Got to get it dialed in with my loads so I can start carrying it some.

Well, the weather is blustery, windy, 48 degrees F, not the best day for a range session, but I had to go check out this revolver. I couldn't be happier with the way it performed. I shot two 1" groups with my .38 wadcutter out of it at 25 yards, the second just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. AWEsome! Best .357 mag group was with my most consistently accurate load in any of my guns, Speer 140JHP in front of a hefty charge of 2400. That one got me 1.5". My 125 grain .357 load uses a Sierra JHP and it shot into about 2.5", plenty good 'nough for self defense. My 158 grain cast SWC load shot 4" left, but into 2". The 140 and the 125 grain loads shoot to POA (now, I adjusted slightly) and my .38 WC load is only 1" below POA for the .357s. My 5.0 grain unique/158 cast SWC .38 load, mild +P, shot about an inch high of the magnum POA and a 2" group.

Unlike with my other Taurus and my Blackhawk, this thing shoots .38 to similar POA. the other two there's 4" difference in elevation, shooting the .38s low of course. I have the sights on each gun marked on the elevation screw for preferred .38 and .357 load in each gun. I really don't have to adjust this one much, just hold a tad high with the wadcutter or a tad low with the 158 grain .38, but I did put a mark on the elevation screw for the .38 wadcutter load anyway.

I've been totin' it IWB since I left the range, feels like my P90 on the hip which is a 33 ounce gun (similar weight). I've carried that P90 all day many times. This revolver doesn't bulge under just a T shirt, though, so I'm thinking it might be my preferred summer gun for IWB carry. I normally pocket carry, but if I'm going somewhere out of town I often carry a bigger, more powerful gun IWB, usually the .45ACP P90.

To cap off the session with the M66 before I started shooting my M85UL, I mowed down some 6" plates off hand at 25 yards DA and drew on 4 pepper poppers which I mowed down with 4 shots about as fast as I've ever done it from about 20 yards. I get carried away on the pepper poppers with my autos sometimes and miss one trying for too much speed. The revolver seems to tame me a bit. :D

I didn't chrony any of my loads out of the 3" tube today. That will have to wait. It's blowing so hard out there I doubt I could keep the thing upright on the tripod, been there, done that.

Nice revolver MCGunner,

Were you at the show in Victoria???? The last time I was there there wasnt much to look at. I've resigned myself to make the show around the Houston areas now, or in Austin. if for no other reason than selection. I picked up my last 5.5" Redhawk at the Pasadena Gunshow.

I still need to drop by for that cup of coffee one day. I drive by your place at least once a week.

Yeah, the one in Victoria. It's never very big, can see it all in 30 minutes. But, I didn't have anything better to do. LOL I won a door prize there once, a Remington BDL in .25-06. I traded it at Eller's for a M7 Remington stainless in .308 which I was really wanting. Not bad for five bucks, eh? :D

You didn't miss much at this show. Everything was even higher than usual. I just happened on this Taurus and was specifically looking for a 3 inch K frame sized revolver. All the Smith 66 and 19s and such were ridiculous. They even had a couple of 10s there that were in a lot worse shape than my M10, 4" guns, for over $300.

There was one guy selling lots of western holsters. I didn't stop to price check. I'd kinda like to have a buscadero rig for my stainless .45 Blackhawk, but it ain't like I'd actually USE it. LOL!

I went to that Pasadena show once. The one I went to, anyway, wasn't all that big, though it was bigger than Victoria. I remember seeing a Blackhawk 4 5/8 inch in .357 at one there and not buying it. They wanted $180. :banghead: I bought something else I wanted, but can't even remember what it was. Didn't have enough for the Blackhawk. Even if there was something wrong with it, I could have sent it to Ruger. That's always the way it seems to go. Yesterday, I had a G note in my pocket and could only find one deal that was even half way decent...:banghead: Heck, they had one here in Port Lavaca a few times at the Bauer center that was bigger than Victoria. I haven't been to the GRB center, but saw a few huge ones at the Astrohall in the past. They have a good one in Corpus, too, now and then at the convention center there. I need to check that one out. Was there once when one was going on and didn't have any spare cash and the wife wouldn't let me go in...:cuss: It was like "Look, a gun show!" "OH NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT!" We were there for a concert. Bummer.

Yeah, stop by sometime if you can stand the mess. I'm usually around if I ain't down at my place huntin' this time of year. Planning on going Wednesday morning. Missed a hog with my blackhawk at about 65 yards the other day. :banghead: I'm going back with a friggin' rifle, LOL!
