Got a deal on a 597

Well, my continual scanning of the Wal-Mart gun racks has paid off. I found a Remington 597 in .22LR (was looking for a plinker anyway- 'dem groundhogs are gonna be back) with the camo stock for only $140. It is not listed on Remington's site or in their 2006 calendar, so I am guessing it was discontinued for 2006. I don't know what the usual price on this thing would be, but I haven't seen any other 597 priced at under $180.

Using my wife's WM discount, I walked away for under $130. Niiiiiice.

I think the 597's in camo are pretty neat, some are green camo and some are gray camo. I read a post over on Rimfire Central that said they were only made one year(2000 I believe). Locally, two different Walmarts had them and one was charging $139, while the other was charging $109. I talked to an older guy in the sporting goods dept. who said these guns were originally priced around $179, but they didn't move well, so they kept going down in price. Kind of a unique variation.

They had to have been made more recently than 2000. Mine has the 3rd generation magazine, and the inside of the receiver is stamped "05". I am wondering if it was a special run or something- the camo on mine is very similar to the realtree stuff.

Yeah, wouldn't you know it- the first day I can get to the range is Friday, and they are already saying cold and snowy. I've got a whole brick and a half of ammo to blow through! Doesn't the weather understand? :banghead:

I just bought a .22LR 597 last week and got out to shoot it for the first time on Saturday. I loaded 10 rounds into the magazine and the rifle proceded to jam on every other shot. After doing a little research, I found the the problem was the magazine. I have ordered a new one from Rimfire Sports & Custom that is supposed to fix the problem.

The jaming problem became a non-issue with fewer than 6 rounds loaded into the magazine. The 597 shoots like a dream and I found the accuracy very good. I have owned a Ruger 10/22 in the past and like the 597 much better.

I paid $144.00 for mine.

Academy was selling the two-tone gray/black 597's for $98.00 awhile back. I don't know if this was special pricing or regular.

These are great little guns. I like them much better than the more popular 10/22's. Just make sure you've got the latest iteration of magazines. I believe Rem is on the third iteration now, and IIRC they'll exchange or send you current mags for the older ones free of charge. Also, DO NOT use the threaded holes in the receiver for a scope mount. They almost always strip out and come loose. DO use the dovetail rails. As long as you've got the new mags, float the barrel and make sure the screws that hold the action rods in are only finger tight, you should have an inexpensive, reliable and accurate little .22. Good shooting.
