Oh Hi Oh
I just bought a snubby, bobbed-hammer SP-101. It's my first Ruger revolver. I really like it (much more than I expected to). I took it to the range and put about 50 rounds of .38, .38+P, and .357 110 gr and .357 125 gr through it. The closest thing I have to it in a S&W (weight-wise) is a 686+ but I think the Ruger is closer to the Smith J frame in size. Recoil was not objectionable with the magnums. The gun is surprisingly accurate and the trigger is far smoother than I've been lead to believe by some of the gun salesman who make Ruger sound like a meat grinder when comparing to Smith. In fact I'd say this Ruger is about as smooth as some of my Smiths, just "different". The sides of the trigger are a bit sharp but I can cure that with a scotch stone and some polis. All in all I'm quite impressed and may look into other Rugers. I still want, er I mean I need, a .44 magnum. Maybe I'll look into a 5.5" Redhawk instead of a Smith 629.

One question, is it normal for the ejection rod to wiggle and and rattle. It looks to me like that's how it's designed, but thought I'd ask.

I keep telling people the the current Ruger GP/SP triggers smooth out wonderfully with use. My two Ruger triggers are better then my new Smith triggers. They were not out of the box but after use definitely are.

Glad you like the Ruger they have always been one of my favorites.

I have shot the GP100 6" and 4" and the SP101, as well as a 7 1/2" Redhawk .44. I would advise going with the longer .44 for reduced
recoil, better accuracy, and versatility.

Sorry missed your question.

"is it normal for the ejection rod to wiggle and and rattle"

Not in my experience. Eveything always seemed firm.

yes the ejector rod wiggles a bit, without looking I think it is two pieces. Its never been a problem.

Yep, perfectly normal for your ejector rod to wiggle. The one thing that bothers me about my SP101 is that little rattle. I do love that gun though. Congrats on the purchase!

Unload it and swing the cylinder out. Look at it from the front. The ejector rod is off center! First time I saw that, it wigged me out a little. The ejector rod is a seperate piece from everything else and every one that I have seen rattles and droops down a little when the cylinder is closed. It has nothing to do with cylinder lock up as we are used to on Smiths. Enjoy.

Yes, wiggle on the ejector rod is normal

I have the 2.25" SP 101 and LOVE it.....

However, I wish I got the 3". IMO, the 3" has better balance, and is a little bit easier to hit with with the longer sight radius. However, the 2.25" for its size is VERY ACCURATE IMO.

perfectly normal. Unlike other pistols the function of the ejector rod on the Ruger is simply to eject casings, on other revolvers it helps to lock the cylinder in place and has to be rigid. As long as you can press on it and make the casings come out, its working fine.

This type of lock is one of the things that makes Rugers such comparitively strong and durable revolvers. And you never have to worry about the rod coming loose and binding up the cylinder (no fun at all).

I also wish I had gotten a 3 inch SP. Don't get me wrong, I love mine. But I just wonder since I like the one I have so much, I imagine I would enjoy a 3 inch even more. I need to come up with an excuse to buy another one.

I managed to pick up a beauty last year.A NIB SP101 in 9mm with the 2 1/4" short barrel.I have no idea how it shoots,it's for the time being a safe queen. It's mint with the box ,paperwork ,shipping sleeve. When I saw it I had to grab it even though I don't have much use for a 9mm.

Ruger Redhawk

Redhawk- I just bought one last month in 9mm and it shoots very well. Mine was a used version so I got it as a shooter and have been enjoying it a lot. I also have the same gun in .357 and the 9mm groups just as well and is lower in recoil, with the quick reload of the Moonclips I've just found my new tankbag gun.

My sp is my CCW..great gun....I just bought some of those new 135gr 38+p's...very accurate...haven't chrono'ed them yet though....I bought a Houge Monogrip for mine and love it.....tames the magnums even more.Plus it seems to point better for me than with the factory grips.
I had a gun smith take off the edges on the trigger(it would cut my finger)and also got a trigger job done on mine....it's my "never trade it" gun.....congrats.

Bought a DAO SP 2.25" bbl. last winter. Action was good but took it apart and put a Wolff Spring Kit in it. and smoothed up some parts with a ceramic stone. DA trigger pull is smooth at 9 lbs and the gun goes bang every time.

I tried a couple of different grips: Hogue and Badger ultimately went back to the factory with the small wood inserts from a small GP 100 grip in the SPs. They really fill up the grip without a lot of extra bulk. The GP grip wood is convex rather than flat like the factory SP grip.

I put a Meprolight tritium night sight on it a few weeks ago and I think my mods are complete. Shot the gun with Magnums (357 Winchester Silvertips 145gr) off hand at 50 ft and got a group of 1.4" for 5 shots. un shoots to point of aim.

The guns ready now I need to prepare. :D

love mine, am looking into getting my spur hammer "despured" locally.........
