I just bought a snubby, bobbed-hammer SP-101. It's my first Ruger revolver. I really like it (much more than I expected to). I took it to the range and put about 50 rounds of .38, .38+P, and .357 110 gr and .357 125 gr through it. The closest thing I have to it in a S&W (weight-wise) is a 686+ but I think the Ruger is closer to the Smith J frame in size. Recoil was not objectionable with the magnums. The gun is surprisingly accurate and the trigger is far smoother than I've been lead to believe by some of the gun salesman who make Ruger sound like a meat grinder when comparing to Smith. In fact I'd say this Ruger is about as smooth as some of my Smiths, just "different". The sides of the trigger are a bit sharp but I can cure that with a scotch stone and some polis. All in all I'm quite impressed and may look into other Rugers. I still want, er I mean I need, a .44 magnum. Maybe I'll look into a 5.5" Redhawk instead of a Smith 629.
One question, is it normal for the ejection rod to wiggle and and rattle. It looks to me like that's how it's designed, but thought I'd ask.
