I am 17 and work at a certain well-known fast food restruant, and I got a write up for something I didn't do at work the other day. I plan to challenge it, but assuming it doesn't go well and the write up remains, I have a question; will it in any way affect my right to buy and own a gun when I turn 18? I know it is an odd question, but there are some weird laws out there and they are only getting weirder. Thanks.

did your write up result in criminal charges? Were you arrested and charged with a crime? If not, then you likely have nothing to worry about.

NO. Thank goodness not lol it was just my team leader being ticked off at me for some unknown reason. I just am wondering if something like that on my public record will affect my rights.

Unless you live in NY which has some very odd permit requirements, the below list is about the only thing that would preclude you from purchasing a firearm.

Persons under indictment for, or convicted of, any crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding on year;
Fugitives from justice;
Persons who are unlawful users of, or addicted to, any controlled substance;
Persons who have been declared by a court as mental defectives or have been committed to a mental institution;
Illegal aliens, or aliens who were admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa;
Persons who have been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces;
Persons who have renounced their United States citizenship;
Persons subject to certain types of restraining orders; and
Persons who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

sweet, thanks. Needless to say, I am looking around for a new job. A gun store would be nice but I don't think they would hire minors.

It's NOT a "public record", nor is it a criminal matter. Even if they fire you because you didn't mop the restroom, it's nothing to affect your gun rights.

LOL

McDonald's can't take your guns for not making the order correctly.

In fact, I'll tell you a story from when I was your age.

I worked at publix (grocery store chain in FL) and in my last months there I was a senior in HS, had the hottest girl in school, and I was headed to college on a full scholarship with money left over in my pocket in 2 weeks. I knew just how temporary that job was, so I just stopped giving a damn. The managers were adult punks. So I stopped cleaning the bathrooms, I rarely pushed in carts, and I stopped shaving for work. This pissed them off and eventually I got written up. They told me to go home and shave. I signed the writeup, gave it back, and said "I'm out of here, I don't need this." And I left. To this day, I've never needed to use them as a reference.

Now that I'm out of college and working a job that actually covers expenses and leaves some to be put away, I laugh about that job. Those "ticked off" managers are still whining about who did or didn't refill the paper towels. I make more than both of them combined. They're big fish, but in a small bowl. All they have domain over are those poor high school kids who are trying to make a few bucks and take the prom queen out to the movies. They're the people who change the work schedule so you miss work unknowingly so they can write you up and not give you a 10 cent raise. They're the people who send you into the restroom to clean turds off the floor with a single ply paper towel and laugh about it to the assistant. Like I said. Punks.

Bottom line: they have nothing on you and you can go on to better things. What they put on you does not follow you like a criminal record.

I worked for many years in the food service industry so I can say this pretty definitively: This write up will by no means be public nor will it likely ever mean anything to anybody outside of your current company. That having been said it's still a good idea to avoid getting in trouble at work.

As for gun rights, although each state may vary, unless you've committed a crime there's nothing to worry about. I might think about finding another job though. Food service jobs are far too easy to come by to work somewhere you don't like.

Don't sweat it.

You could be fired from 100 jobs and it not make one lick of difference in your legal ability to buy or own firearms.

Lol,

Are you serious? Getting a write up from work does not make you a convicted felon.

Ive been written up at several jobs. Two were final writtens. Each time I was written up it was because a customer complained. Hell we were doing collections for Gods sake. We weren't customer service agents. You can't collect money by being nice, you have to be pushy and rude. Apparently collecting 20,000 a month or more was not good enough for them. The funny thing is they never had a lick of proof. They didn't have any recordings of calls. I knew this and refused to sign the write ups. Each time they treated to fire he if I didn't sign then. I told them to have at it do what they had to do. I kept waiting for them to fire me but they never did. They did get mad though when I told them to prove it and that I want signing the write ups. I wanted them to fire me so I could sue because I knew I'd win as all they had was hear say against me. No actual proof just he said she said. That doesn't hold up in court. Probably why they never did fire me.

Sent from my mind using ninja telepathy.

I hate to sound heartless over a young person asking a question like that. But we could have really had some fun with this one.

Alas, all the posts are correct.
