Got Lucky: "New" Model 28 w/4" Bbl...

Hello. I found a clean and "nearly new" Model 28 at a good price the other day. I do not think that the service stocks that came on it were original as they were dinged up pretty good. This gun has no holster wear comensurate with the beat up stocks. For now, I stuck a set of the large N-frame target grips on it.


This one has the "N" serial number and the action was not quite as smooth as other N-frames, but was easily cleaned up and improved.


The action on this older Model 28 ("S" prefix in serial number and 4-screw) is as smooth as I've seen on any N-frame S&W.

I paid $300 for this latest Model 28 and consider it money well-spent. The gun shoots and functions just fine...as expected.

I remember when these things were in many police holsters and very easy to find at what would now be considered cheap prices.

If I had a time machine...

Good snag. I myself very recently acquired an old Highway Patrolman (S-prefix) that had been refinished in hi-polish nickel. Call it an abomination, but the finish is really something to see. Very smooth action. Has magnas and Tyler-T as well. I'm sure you'll enjoy your purchase

The time machine would only be good if you could bring todays dollars with you in it......

But then nobody in the past would recognize the new 'funny money' that the treasury prints nowadays....

So you'd just wind up being arrested for counterfeiting....

And you'd still be in prison today with no guns....

A fella just can't win....

I have always admired nice look'in older Smith & Wesson N-frames. I'd

If I had a time machine

I'd take gold (or gems), to exchange for period cash. Sure, I would lose "dollar value", but no funny money.

Your 28 is very nice. I like the 6" guns myself. Dinged grips could be originial. A lot of the duty holsters left the grips hanging out where they couold get dinged (getting in/out of cars etc.) while the rest of the gun never came out of the holster. The small "magna" grips were the standard on Model 28s. On the heavy gun, the small grips increased the "felt" weight. But they had the advantage that small hands could get a good grip. For those of us with larger hands, larger grips or a grip adapter is a welcome thing.
