I picked up my 4 5/8" Blackhawk .44 Special today. It feels neat just to type "Blackhawk .44 Special!!!" Skeeter Skelton would have really liked this single action revolver. The blue is very deep and dark without being "black." It truly looks old world blue. The gun is very nicely finished. I can't wait to shoot it tomorrow. My fired case manilla envelope is dated just nine days ago (6-16-09).
The XR3 grip feels wonderfully small in my big hands. I love the balance of the short barrel too.
I ordered a set of birdseye maple gunfighter grips from Cary C to be made from this blank off his website:
I think they'll make this Blackhawk's blue look even better when it's set off by the contrast of the yellow/gold maple!
I reload .44 Special since I now have 7 revolvers chambered for the cartridge. It's obviously my favorite! Two Colts on the left, two AWA's on the right, my Cimarron 1872 customized by Bob Munden on the top and my S&W 624 engraved by Michael Gouse on the bottom.
