I bought a Savage Model 110 package... got a great deal on it... Only $320 bucks... its a .30-06... Ihave to buy a new scope, but I was planning on buying one anyways:) the barrel floats, or at least at the end of the stock icanpush it down... is it a free floating barrel?

thanks

Most likely it is not floated from factory in a Savage 110. My dad has the same gun with a synthetic stock. It most likely has "pressure points" further down the stock that make contact with the barrel.

Fold a dollar bill in half length ways. Holding each end, form a "U" and try to slide it down the length of the barrel in between the stock and barrel. If it gets caught between the barrel and stock its not free floated.

I have a older 110E and it was "floated" to about 1 1/2" back from the fornt of the fore-end.... It got alot better when i opened it up back to the connecting bolt....

If you want something to try out for a load mine loves a 180gr BTSP Hornady over 45.5 of Varget.... Max COL listed in the speer manual works fine in the magazine too (dont rememebr the COL off hand)

Got my new rifle

I bought a Savage Model 110 several years ago in .264 Magnum caliber. It was the best shooting rifle I ever owned. The barrel rubbed the stock and that ticked a gunsmith off because he free-floated barrels for customers for better accuracy. My .264 shot consistently under 1" at 100 yards right out of the box. I was using a 2-7 Leupold scope. No joke...I once got a 3 shot group at 200 yards that was 5/8" and aligned perfectly on the vertical. That was the best it ever did. Savages have a good record for accuracy right out of the box.
