A 14 ga greener makes a nice addition to any English gun collection. This greener police gun mark III/14 is a straight cased 14 1/2 gauge with standard firing pin.
I read an article by an Indian gun writer that the British chose a unigue gauge for the police guns so that rebels in India could not use stolen police ammunition in 12ga guns, or 12ga civilian ammo in stolen police guns. They apparently believed it unlikely that guns and ammo would be stolen together in quantity by revolutionaries.
A similar policy drives the gun laws of several foreign countries: civilians cannot own military caliber firearms in Mexico, for example, to help prevent another revolution supported by theft of ammo from military arsenals.
