All off my rifles are millitary "type" iron sighted weapons (AR's, FALs, AKs, SKS's, Garands & Mausers) except for one FT AR that I've scoped. I've really enjoyed shooting the this rifle, it was built around an 18" Kreiger barrel from WOP and has prooved to be extreemly accurate.

Recently I've decided to buy my first modern bolt gun. What ever I buy will be for bench use (mainly 200 yards and in). I already reload for my .223s so I'd really like to stick to that caliber, but may consider .308 or 30.06. I'm looking hard at the Savage 12 LRPV (right hand bolt left hand port), but it's going to cost around a $1,600 with a decent scope & rings. Is this gun worth it? Or should I look at a cheaper model and/or possibly a different caliber?

I realize that questions such as mine are asked alot, and often get some folks worked up, but I'm just looking for honest opinons from experience people. I want to feel comfortable when I drop this much cash! :)

If its just 200 or closer, I wouldn't even consider a 308 or 30-06. But even if you get another 223, you might end up with another set of dies because you probably find that you can neck size them to the rifle rather than a full length resizing.

If you are seriously considering spending even close to what that $1600 rifle costs, you might want to look at a used bench rifle in 6mmBR or 6mmPPC.

ETA:
Just realized you were referencing the price of the rifle with scope and rings. The bench rifle will probably be hard to get at that price.
