Got this one Monday just as the light was rapidly failing. A doe walked out and I considered shooting it. I didn't and am glad I didn't. About three minutes later, this fellow walked out.

I had previously gotten this one on December 10.

One of these days, I'll live in a state where deer are plentiful and I can shoot numerous deer each year.

Nice deer

Well, one of the places you can do that is here in Alabama. Our bow season opens in mid October and runs through January. Our gun season opens in mid November and runs through January. The limit is two a day, one of which can be a buck. There is a season limit of three bucks. So if a person killed his limit every day of the season, he could legally kill around 210 deer each season. Of course with the three buck limit, 207 would have to be does. And we don't have to bother with tags or check them in anywhere. We do have to carry a harvest record on which we list the bucks we kill. But this is the seventh season I have hunted and have killed 15 deer and nobody has ever checked mine. All we have to do is add big game to our hunting license which kicks the price up to $24.

Also an added bonus is the cost of living is low. And if you are a football fan, you could root for one of the teams that won the national championship the last four years running, Alabama-3 and Auburn-1

I think deer are pretty numerous in Virginia. You can't drive a mile on a rural road in early November without seeing at least 2 dead deer. I know people who shoot 5 or 6 a year.....I personally have shot 5 in 24 years of hunting them...I don't have any burning desire to shoot more than 1 a year, it is all I can do to eat 1 deer in 2 years.

The first deer I shot 20 years ago had a 4x2 rack...but it was about half the side of the one in the OP.

The one I shot this year had a 4x3+/- rack...but the 4 point side was huge and the other side was shrivled and malformed. I wonder if it got damaged while it was still growing.

Congrats...great lookin deer. Nice to hammer one at the end of the season too.

Wow. Nice deer. Our bow season is first of October through last Saturday in November. Rifle season is last Saturday in October through last Saturday in November. One buck unless you have an any deer permit in which case you can take one if either sex. Total.

There is an expanded archery season in some parts of Maine.

Nice shot!

Actually I have to admit the one in the first picture was not a nice shot. It was only a 75 yard shot. I rushed my shot and didn't draw a good bead with my scope. If my shot had been two or three inches higher, I would have missed him. This was the eleventh shot at deer with my '06. I put eleven deer on the ground with it. But this was the first that wasn't a one shot kill. The reason I put this one on the ground with one shot was because I blew out about three inches of his spine. He had no use of the back half of his body. When I walked up to him he was still very much alive. I finished him with my .45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk which I also always carry during gun season. That is why so much blood came out of his mouth. If you look about half way up on the edge of his right antler, you can see the spot on his back where the 150 grain Remington CoreLokt came out.

This has taught me a lesson I should already have known, always make sure of the shot before I pull the trigger.
