Anyone who think this fellow isn't running for the White House better wake up.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Gov. Bill Richardson, who served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during the Clinton presidency, is heading overseas next week for talks aimed at persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear arms program.

Richardson leaves Saturday and will arrive in North Korea on Monday for three days of talks, his spokesman, Pahl Shipley, said late Thursday.

The trip was first reported on The New York Times Web site.

Richardson told the newspaper that he won’t represent the United States as an official negotiator but said the trip is intended “to move the diplomatic process forward” after an agreement last month in talks between North Korea and the United States.

“I am not an official envoy, but I am supportive of the administration’s new policy to engage the North Koreans through dialogue and diplomacy,” Richardson said.

“North Korea is at a crossroads today, and it should take advantage of the goal of the six-party talks, a nuclear-free Korean peninsula, to advance its own interest in reviving its economy and building a better life for its citizens,” he said.

In January 2003, months after North Korea admitted having violated the terms of a 1994 Clinton-era accord freezing its nuclear program, top North Korean envoys went to Santa Fe with Richardson, who had just taken office as governor.

Richardson also has maintained his contacts with North Korea, briefing then-Secretary of State Colin Powell and other officials during President Bush’s first term on his relations.

Richardson also visited North Korea during his tenure as a congressman from New Mexico. In 1996, he helped secure the release of an American detained by North Korea for three months on spy charges. Two years earlier, he helped free a U.S. soldier whose helicopter had strayed into North Korea.

Yeah, this is called "let's prop up his foreign affairs credentials".

Mind you, if it's him or the Hillabeast...hey, prop his butt up .

Jim,

I don't know a lot about Richardson - other than he worked for the most corrupt President in my memory, but I'd add McCain and Giuliani right after Hillabeast. There is no way I could vote for either of them. They all make Richardson look good.

He can ask them how their missile technology is coming along...and where they got it.

Richardson, for me, will exacerbate our problems abroad and do nothing to stem the problem along our southern border.

Richardson is infamous for this stuff. Trying to spring POWs and hostages too. I think of him as the Hispanic Jesse Jackson.

I sent a email to El Presidente asking him to reimburse the NM taxpayers for Mr. Bills wages for the three days he is on Federal business. The rest of you folks need to pony up your share.

Gov. Cheeseburger is at least as slick as his former boss. Heck if we are lucky they may just keep him and a couple of other wastes of oxygen tat he his carting along.
Good Idea Sam, Patsy Madrid does not like him, I'll call her tonight to see if we can get a refund on his wages in adtion to the 65 bucks for gas price refunds

Chuck

Will this result in N.M. being added to the (now) Seven-Party Talks? Or will he just negotiate a separate peace for his constituants?

At any rate, it's good for state's rights.

Richardson already had foreign affairs experience before he became governor of NM. Richardson is looking pretty good. If he can only have the guts and backing to stand up to Hillary.

Whatever you think of his shift to the middle with his stance on immigration, he's going to stick by his decision to take the side that he did. Otherwise, he'll be made out to look like a flip-flopper. Actually, that's true of any Democrat that attempts a shift to the middle/right. After the Kerry debacle, whatever moves the Dem candidates make to the right, they'll have to stick to those decisions to the bitter end.
