I know you've all been in suspense ever since I announced my imminent purchase of a 3" Ruger GP100. Well, Cabela's confused a 3" SP101 with a 3" GP100, so woe was me.

Enter The Bullet Trap in Plano, TX, who got a hold of one for me for the perfectly good sum of $489 before tax. I picked it up this last Friday. Shot at the range there, 50 rounds of UMC 130gr .38s, did acceptable (for newbie shooter me), and had the girlfriend take her first shots (she hit the target holder, which kind of counts), then took her (and her) home and cleaned her (). I was feeling pretty good about my new gun. (side note: does every FFL feel obligated to give you the solemn "I'm sorry sir, but you're under arrest" routine after the NICS check?)

Then I went out today with my Dad to his private club range... nice place, laid back, good for rookies like us. 18 rounds of UMC .357s, 70 .38 reloads and 30 more UMC 130s. I do not blush when I tell you I shot the **** out of those targets. Like I said... I'm pretty new at this. I love it, I get in to every aspect of it, but there is no substitute for experience, right? I shot a 12-shot group the size of the palm of my smallish hands at 7 yards, and the six I tried at 10 yards were all inside the 9 ring or better. More than good enough for me!

Also bought a GALCO FLETCH holster today... still need to get a belt. Good holster, thumb-break and all.

All in all this is a great gun. The trigger is wonderful... the only SA shots were the magnums I took out for a spin. The new Hogue grips Ruger puts on due to their old supplier tanking are fine for the range, but not anything approaching concealable (not worried about CCing this puppy, but obviously I like the option).

So no buyer's remorse here. If you're looking for a solidly built, vaguely concealable multi-purpose .357 wheel gun, I shamelessly endorse it.

Congrats on your purchase. I agree with your shameless endorsement - I picked up a used-but-only-fired-once 4" GP100 a few months ago. I love the weight and feel of it, and it shoots great!

+1! I love my GP100. One of the best factory triggers I have ever felt! It has taken up residence in my night stand.

Yep, GP100 is my favorite gun now. I like shooting the 4" gun a little better than the 3", but the 3" rests at my bedside. My wife likes shooting the 3" with the smaller handle and I changed the springs so she can shoot it double action.

You made a good choice for a 1st handgun. What happened to the SP 101?

Quality control on recent-vintage Rugers of every sort has been quite good. My NewVaq357 is a 2005 specimen and is built as well as any production gun made today short of a Freedom Arms.

Good to see the trend continuing.

I bought a new GP 100 6" SS about a week ago. Overall I am very pleased with the revolver. The trigger pull is a little heavy (About 6 lbs). I ordered a Wolf spring kit for it a couple days ago. When the spring kit comes in, I’ll do a complete trigger job on it.

My 6"SS GP100 is one fine piece of machinery! It has quality written all over. It is my favorite gun to shoot.

I'm liking Ruger more and more. :)

I have a 3" GP100 for off duty carry, along with a 2 1/4" SP101 and a 4" GP100 for the Police Games, Revolver Class. Rugers can be 'smithed pretty easily and I'm becoming a fan of their ease of disassembly. No screwws, except on the stocks, to turn and bugger up. :D

I've added a custom Front Sight to my 3" gun, fiber optic. It was made by my Gunsmith to accomodate my "carry load" and hits dead-on at 25 Yards. Go over to www.rugerforum.net and become a member. After you post 100 times you will have access to "The Library". In there you will find a gunsmithing tutorial by a retired Gunsmith named Iowegan. It's full of good information on how to 'smith your GP100.

Unless Iowegan has approved of freakshow distributing his work it would be unethical to get it any other way than the way I mentioned.

I will send him a PM and find out if the link you provided is approved, I doubt that it is.

OK, I just got a reply from Iowegan and the only way to get an approved copy of HIS work is to join www.rugerforum.net and make 100 post. That will allow you access to "The Library" where the IBOK is located. From there you can make copies or dl to your computer.

Glad I asked:D

She is indeed a sexy beast. Those grips look HUGE on a 3" gun. :what:

they are! I've got the "original" Ruger grips on the way... Ajax is putting together some Ivory grip panels for me too since Midway only sells the outer part. They'll be much more CC-able.

Though I am a lover of the Ruger revolver, the GP-100 never really interested me. That is until I came across the 3". Mine started out a re-import from Canada through CAI. I picked it up at a buddies pawn shop. It looked new and hardly fired. It came from Ruger without a hammer spur or single action shelf, in other words double action only. The accuracy was amazing so I decided to have my first custom gun made. I sent it off to Gemini Customs and Marc Morganti really did a number on it. The DA pull smooth as glass and breaks like glass at about 5lbs. he bead blasted the whole gun, recut the barrel crown and coated the front sight with a polymer coating. I had already dehorned the gun and added a set of Butler Creek grips. It finds a place on my hip quite often. Here are before & After pictures:
