I would like to know some information on a shotgun my grandfather gave me many years ago when I was a teen (about 20 yrs ago). He passed from cancer 4 yrs ago, and I still miss him every day, but have many fond memories of our hunting trips. Specifically, I am interested in its date of manufacture and what it may be worth (though, I am never selling it...too much sentimental value...just curious).

It is:

Ithaca 12 gauge
model 37
patent 1849982
serial 209381

*Three ducks engraved on one side and two pheasant and a dog on the other.

Thank You In Advance For Your Help! ----Mike

lobo9er, I hadn't seen that before. Great post. Did you post that on the main 37 thread? I'm not sure if I came across a link to that there.

Sweet shotgun. I can still remember my mother getting a 37 Featherweight for my dad one Christmas about 1950. He loved that gun and let me shoot it a few times. It handled like no other shotgun I ever handled. He pased away several years ago and my older brother wanted that gun, so he got it. I sure would like to get my hands on that gun one day. You got an exceptional gun for a really exceptional price!!

docnyt, no i haven't i'm glad i could help. Ithaca 37 is good stuff, I never got to go hunting with my grandpa but taking his deer slayer model 37 out with me made it seem like he was there. his dated back to 70-71 still solid and accurate. sounds like it has similar engraving as yours too. good luck and enjoy your 37.

here you go buddy i just looked the date of the 37 i got from my grandpa. took my first deer with it this year. best shotgun i'll ever own.
Lobo9er, thanks for the link! It looks like I have an early 1949 (what year is your's?) model.....Grandpa may have had it with him while he was flying missions in Korea....neat to know. He'd told me so many stories of his time flying missions (WWII, Korea, and Vietnam) in B-24's to B-52's. It is somtimes hard to remember all the details. I'll have to ask my Grandmother, who is still unstoppable at 86!, what she remembers.

I've hunted many, many times with this gun......and It performs very well to this day. I love my 37. -----Mike

hey sorry not respond for a bit. mine is dated 70-71 i think i will check again though. Thats nice to hear about your grandma same here my grandma's trucking too! My grandfather flew in the b-17's in the flying fortress. pretty interesting stuff.

I could have made this post...my M37 was made in 1942 and passed from my grandpa to my dad. I "borrowed" it once when I was 13 and just never gave it back! I've always said that if the house were on fire and my kids were safe, that shotgun is the one thing I would go back in for.

(LOL) I bet your wife finds that comforting. :D I know what you mean though. I've got a 37 Ultrafeatherlight in 20ga and man is that gun sweet.

I'm in the midst of trying to restore my grandpa's Model 37..

Serial #5244. It's an oldie alright.

I've never shot it, but it seems like a damn nice gun.

My wife's legs are all right...she can make it out on her own!

Funny story about a bear wandering into camp, a locked truck and me "saving" dog instead of her...I still hear about that one.
