Every July the Northern grandkis come to visit for a week. 9 yr old grand son has an interest in knives and proudly showed me his boy scout knive. He the stated to whittle and it was evident he was safe, and could handle a knife. I asked his mom and dad if it was ok if we made a knife. They said go for it just teach him to be safe.
Hurrah!
I grab a 3 inch camp knife blank from the bench and call him into my tiny shop area in the utility room.
"dude, wanna make your own knife?"
He lights up,"yes sir"
Aftfer a brief safety lecture we start. He designed, fabricated the scales ground the edge.Simple oak scales with internal pins ( he learned epoxy demands concentration :) ) he also learned patience and precision in drilling, fitting, pinning and staining.
Ground a decent edge but I did have to straighten the bevel line.
I had almost as much fun as he did.
It took us 3 days working slow and safe
Then we made a simple Nylon belt sheath. He grew tired of all the hand sewing :) - sewing machines are not for novices. :)

He was thrilled with the final product and will probable show it off every chance he gets.. sorry I didnt get pics

Nothing like grandkids to get you up and doing.... My oldest is 11 now (six in total with number seven on the way...) and taking a few of them out at a time on the water is something I really look forward to.... My next move will be to build a rod or two for them, something a bit scaled down from what my anglers get handed each day.

Super! Nice to encourage the younger generations to hands on and craft various projects.

I think your daughter could have taken a photo of the knife (using a 35 mm. film camera), had the film developed, sent the prints to you by Pony Express, and it should have made it to your home by now!

Got to have photos to go with your great story!
