Got my 2 Karabiner 31 rifles today, both have walnut stocks! Just in case your wondering where I picked them up from classic arms. Both bores look pristine, one has a good trigger, the other has a great trigger! I have not shot them yet, I am keeping one to as a collectible (the one on top), and the other to shoot. Tell me what you think! Both have Name Tags under the butt plate. How do I contact these original owners? I know one person on here contacted the original owner and received a response with a picture. Let me know!

about 4 weeks...plus selling some old stuff I don't use anymore. Did I do ok?

Toggle action?

Also can someone look at their front sight, is you two lines matched up?

Is there any way to remove dents or make them less noticeable without killing the collector value?

Very nice rifles. I think the K31 is the best mil-surplus rifle on the market. Both of mine are extraordinarily accurate.

On my birch stocked gun the two lines in the front sight post are not lined up. On my walnut stocked gun the lines are almost lined up. Neither rifle needed any sight adjustment with the surplus GP11 ammo.

I bought a bunch of the GP11 from Dan's Ammo in PA. He's great to deal with.

Enjoy your new blasters and shoot safe.

Thanks! How do they look though? Are they complete beaters or are they in decent shaped considering most of the K-31's have some stock damage?

Mine, the lines don't match at all. The front sight is driven back as far as it can possibly go.

Shoots exactly to that point of aim. There's also an X in the front edge of the heat shield, on one side, might have something to do with the gun shooting crooked. Or maybe the owner killed a Nazi, I dunno.

that depends on how good you are. :) joking. toggle action is where the recoil pushes back the bolt, and you push it forward to chamber the next round. I think. I've been picking up most of my gun knowledge as i go, so if you blow yourself up it's not my fault. :D

oh. if you do a good job you shouldn't decrease the value give me some better pics of where it needs to be fixed and i can give some opinions. I know wood [ i like to carve and make things pretty]

A good general rule for collector pieces of anything is to simply stop any further deterioration of the original. Never ever do any form of refinishing if you are looking to retain it's value with collectors. I find that those who collect mil-surps of any type to be those who cherish each and every scar and wonder as to its provenance; refinishing takes away the individual history of the piece.

That being said, small dents in the stock could be raised with a careful application of steam after any finish has been removed. Refinishing the wood and metal could be done but the value you put in would only be reflected in the interest someone had in purchasing it for a shooter.

no one has answered my question yet :banghead: Are these beaters? These where "hand select", would they meet your expectations?
no not a toggle action, its just like a mauser/mosin...ect except you just pull back then push fowrd instead or lifting up pulling back, then pushing forward.

They look really good to me. Although the only one i saw was about 20 feet up on a really big shop wall. It did however have a bullet in the stock, so i dunno. They look okay to me as i said.

Your K-31s are not beaters. Neither are they Toggle action. They are straight pull. You shoot, pull, push to chamber, repeat.

Frankly, I am jealous, because my K-31 is dinged to all hell and the finish is coming off by the pound.

Those both appear to be in pretty good condition. A hand select K31 isn't going to get you a stock anything at all like what you get might on a rearsenaled MN or one a mint yugo sks. These guns were carried and used and it shows.

A damp rag and a hot iron (might not want to let the wife see you) will steam dents out of the woods. Apply for a few seconds, let up, repeat as needed. Really heavy dings where the wood grain is broken will not raise.

As far as refinishing...thats up to you. I've done some K31's with tru-oil and I think they look great but it isn't an authentic finish. If you want the genuine finish and color you'll have to do some leg work to get the right shellac. The swiss rifle forums can point you to that direction if that is what you want. In 20 years I may really regret destroying the value of my K31, or I may still think my $200 shooters look great, time will tell.

;) thanks guys, when I was taking these guns apart the quality of work is amazing. I think I will keep both like they are. Next a beech stock one!

If you don;t have one get one, the quality as a previously mention is far superior to anything thing else on the market in the same price range. I will give a detailed range report when I finally shoot them.

Thanks,

Ryan

Personally, I think you should spend your money firing off letters to Switzerland before your get another K-31. Then, when you do have money for another K-31, get a hand-select tiger from Samco. Tigers are win.

Though, disclaimer, I didn't get mine from Samco, I got it secondhand from some guy on Gunboards.

You have to pull the bolt back to extract and push forward to chamber a fresh round. If the the recoil opened the bolt for you, it might stop in your head :uhoh:

I really don't know the correct terminology for toggle or straight pull action, but they are basically the same thing, although the bolt might unlock because of a different design.

Those are in good shape and nice rifles though :)
