GRNC Alert 07-04-03:
S. 659: End Abusive Gun Suits

[Analysis] S. 659 in the US Senate would prohibit reckless lawsuits. This bill is at a critical juncture. As expected, anti-gunners are trying all their tricks to keep this from passing into law. Of course one of the threats to the passage of this vital legislation is that of a filibuster. S. 659 recently got a boost with Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) signing on as a co-sponsor. The people of North Carolina need to prod Sen. John Edwards to also sign on to this important measure.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED

Contact Senator John Edwards and let him know that you want him to support S. 659. Encourage Sen. Edwards to add his name as a co-sponsor.

Deliver the following message:

Dear Sen. Edwards:

Please support S. 659, Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. This law is vital to the continuation of legitimate commerce through protection from groundless lawsuits designed to limit American freedom by harassing the firearm industry into bankruptcy.

I believe very strongly in the need for this measure and ask that you sign on as a co-sponsor and fight any attempt to filibuster this legislation. The Right to Keep and Bear Arms is imperative to the ability of Americans to remain secure in their homes. Please support this common sense legislation to keep Americans free!

Sincerely,

And the "form response" is in...

Here's the reply I got...

Dear Mr. ***:Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 659, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. I appreciate hearing from you.

I believe the best approach to this important issue is one which strikes a balance between two important principles: protecting the legitimate rights of law-abiding gun owners and keeping guns out of the hands of violent criminals and children.

As you know, our state has a rich tradition of hunting and sporting uses of guns. I value this part of our state's history, and I believe that the Second Amendment gives law-abiding citizens the right to own a gun. I also believe that there are a few common-sense measures that can improve the safety of firearms and help protect all of us from weapons in the hands of violent criminals.

S. 659 would prohibit civil liability actions from being brought or continued against manufacturers, distributors, dealers, or importers of firearms or ammunition for damages resulting from the misuse of their products by others. This bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, on which I serve.

I understand your concern that gun manufacturers and dealers are being held liable for the harm caused by those who unlawfully misuse firearms that function as designed and intended. Please be assured that I will keep your strong support for this legislation in mind as it is considered by the Senate.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please feel free to keep in touch.

Yours sincerely,

John Edwards
United States Senate

You beat me to it. I got the same canned response. Let's hope he's listening...

Translation:

Howdy! I'm off stumping about the country trying to garner enough cash and favors to run for the whitehouse! Since I rarely spend any time in the state you elected me to represent, I've carefully crafted this half-baked response to shine you on while I'm stuffing my face with lobster at $10,000 a plate dinners and whining about how horrible I was to kill squirrels. Please accept this small token of my disdain for the common folk of North Carolina so I can get back to prostituting myself to people who are obviously more important than those who elected me.
