Gravity kills more than the criminal use of firearms! So does poison!

They sent a safety power point presentation around at work and I was surprised to learn that falls killed 18807 people in 2004 (most recent year full stats are available from the CDC) and accidental poisonings killed 14,457.

Going to CDC website http://webapp.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/mortrate.html and using their cool query feature I found that in 2004 11,624 firearm murders were committed, 649 firearm accidental deaths and 16750 firearm suicides. Non-firearm homicides were 5733.

The CDC web site is a great resource despite the generally liberal bias of their leadership.

i've been living with gravity for years... i'm used to it i guess. maybe a little more gravity wouldn't be so bad....? i mean, what if one day something happened and we had to be held onto the earth? i think a little gravy in reserve might help :)

Gravity doesn't kill people... people kill people. There's 10 times more gravity on Jupiter. When was the last time someone died from "gravity" on Jupiter?

Curved spacetime is dangerous stuff, I guess. (BTW, I study black holes for a living...)

I imagine most of the people who die from falls are elderly and frail. Hm, maybe we should outlaw aging? After all, statistics show that growing old is inevitably fatal. ;)

Typical manipulation of key data. Somehow, the actual reason for deaths produced, "falls," gets changed to say "gravity." Why?

Was there something not sexy enough with actually restating the actual accurate information as reported by the CDC? Does revamping the information somehow make it better?

What was wrong with noting that falls kill more folks than firearms?

Gravity is the cause of all falls. Lighten up... :p

This data underestimates the lethality of gravity... it doesn't include the instances in which people are killed by things falling on them. It's Saturday morning... used to be a perfect time to turn on your TV and see this demonstrated, usually with a piano.

I wonder if we could convince McCarthy (sp) to sponsor a bill outlawing dangerous vertical accelerations. She does have a history of banning things without understanding them.

After reading this thread, I know why Limbaugh says to leave the jokes to professionals.
