I've been tweaking my security on a regular basis since I built and moved into my house 12 years ago. This is the house I intend to live in until they move me to the nursing home or the cemetary. I recently had an alarm technician out to update and expand my security system and I mentioned I wanted another layer of protection on the gun safe itself. He suggested adding a single zone with contacts on the door and the floor that would alert if door is opened or whole safe is attempted to be moved. Cost to add is minimal and I told him I thought that was a great idea. He smiled and said, "yeah, that what I did on my own gun safe."
I recomend folks periodically review thier systems and of course layer security. as technology changes, it gets easier and cheaper to upgrade and the good security people are both knowledgable and creative. Anybody that installs a system and doesn't change anything for 5 years or more is probably missing something.

Is is possible to get a pressure mat wired to the system? I think most people would walk directly on it and trigger the alarm before they start working the safe or have the door open.

A mercury switch would probably work great. Any jingle in that bad boy and it will trigger whatever you have it hooked up to. Could install the mercury switch on the door and it would do double duty for tipping and for the door opening.

Not ALL my guns are in the safe but the majority of them are and as I said, there are other layers of security throughout my house. This particular upgrade was prompted by a conversation I had with a relative from another state. He told me about a fella who was well known to be a gun owner/collector who came home to find that someone had broken in and apparently wrapped a chain around his safe. The safe with many valuable guns and much of one doorway and wall were gone. ouch.
Not in the safe, are my carry G23, and a few other strategically placed firearms that I consider part of my security plan.

Some panels can be instructed to alarm for certain zones even when the panel is disarmed. If you go this route, you'd need two zones -- one for the door and one for the safe itself. You could set up the safe sensor to alarm 24/7, even when the panel is disarmed.

If you forget to arm the system and someone breaks in, the alarm will go off when they move the safe.

In the rare instance you actually need to move the safe, you can bypass the zone at the keypad.

Giant Canister of OC spray?

Good thread. I have sort of come to the conclusion personally that with security layers you quickly reach a 'layer' of diminishing returns. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, and for the price, why not. However, if you already have an alarm system on the house and a scary dog or two, who is really getting to your safe while you're out of the house? And if they do get to your safe, it's likely the police are already on their way. A more likely scenario, it would seem to me, is that someone has you or a family member opening that safe at gun point....for which I would want some type of panic button installed in, on, or around the safe itself.

You are probably well aware of this but maybe worth mentioning is that phone lines, which I believe the majority of security systems are hooked up to, can be cut if exposed where they come into the house...I had not really thought about this until I first looked at security systems. The additional cost of a system that works on two way radio transmission may be worth considering.

security

I found a product called "BURGLAR BOMB" that has a trip wire activated pepper spray canister with enough spray to effectively clear 2000 sq. ft. Not a stand alone security system , but an effective extra layer of protection to slow the slime bags down. Found it at the local gunstore , I don't have the website handy , but I'm sure you can Google it .

"The unit I got is rather strange. It says "Front toward Enemy" Anyone know what that means? "

HAH!! That ought to take care of the BGs!
