In election 2008, don’t forget Angry White Man

There is a great amount of interest in this year’s presidential elections, as everybody seems to recognize that our next president has to be a lot better than George Bush. The Democrats are riding high with two groundbreaking candidates — a woman and an African-American — while the conservative Republicans are in a quandary about their party’s nod to a quasi-liberal maverick, John McCain.

Each candidate is carefully pandering to a smorgasbord of special-interest groups, ranging from gay, lesbian and transgender people to children of illegal immigrants to working mothers to evangelical Christians.

There is one group no one has recognized, and it is the group that will decide the election: the Angry White Man. The Angry White Man comes from all economic backgrounds, from dirt-poor to filthy rich. He represents all geographic areas in America, from urban sophisticate to rural redneck, deep South to mountain West, left Coast to Eastern Seaboard.

His common traits are that he isn’t looking for anything from anyone — just the promise to be able to make his own way on a level playing field. In many cases, he is an independent businessman and employs several people. He pays more than his share of taxes and works hard.

The victimhood syndrome buzzwords — “disenfranchised,” “marginalized” and “voiceless” — don’t resonate with him. “Press ‘one’ for English” is a curse-word to him. He’s used to picking up the tab, whether it’s the company Christmas party, three sets of braces, three college educations or a beautiful wedding.

He believes the Constitution is to be interpreted literally, not as a “living document” open to the whims and vagaries of a panel of judges who have never worked an honest day in their lives.

The Angry White Man owns firearms, and he’s willing to pick up a gun to defend his home and his country. He is willing to lay down his life to defend the freedom and safety of others, and the thought of killing someone who needs killing really doesn’t bother him.

The Angry White Man is not a metrosexual, a homosexual or a victim. Nobody like him drowned in Hurricane Katrina — he got his people together and got the hell out, then went back in to rescue those too helpless and stupid to help themselves, often as a police officer, a National Guard soldier or a volunteer firefighter.

His last name and religion don’t matter. His background might be Italian, English, Polish, German, Slavic, Irish, or Russian, and he might have Cherokee, Mexican, or Puerto Rican mixed in, but he considers himself a white American.

He’s a man’s man, the kind of guy who likes to play poker, watch football, hunt white-tailed deer, call turkeys, play golf, spend a few bucks at a strip club once in a blue moon, change his own oil and build things. He coaches baseball, soccer and football teams and doesn’t ask for a penny. He’s the kind of guy who can put an addition on his house with a couple of friends, drill an oil well, weld a new bumper for his truck, design a factory and publish books. He can fill a train with 100,000 tons of coal and get it to the power plant on time so that you keep the lights on and never know what it took to flip that light switch.

Women either love him or hate him, but they know he’s a man, not a dishrag. If they’re looking for someone to walk all over, they’ve got the wrong guy. He stands up straight, opens doors for women and says “Yes, sir” and “No, ma’am.”

He might be a Republican and he might be a Democrat; he might be a Libertarian or a Green. He knows that his wife is more emotional than rational, and he guides the family in a rational manner.

He’s not a racist, but he is annoyed and disappointed when people of certain backgrounds exhibit behavior that typifies the worst stereotypes of their race. He’s willing to give everybody a fair chance if they work hard, play by the rules and learn English.

Most important, the Angry White Man is pissed off. When his job site becomes flooded with illegal workers who don’t pay taxes and his wages drop like a stone, he gets righteously angry. When his job gets shipped overseas, and he has to speak to some incomprehensible idiot in India for tech support, he simmers. When Al Sharpton comes on TV, leading some rally for reparations for slavery or some such nonsense, he bites his tongue and he remembers. When a child gets charged with carrying a concealed weapon for mistakenly bringing a penknife to school, he takes note of who the local idiots are in education and law enforcement.

He also votes, and the Angry White Man loathes Hillary Clinton. Her voice reminds him of a shovel scraping a rock. He recoils at the mere sight of her on television. Her very image disgusts him, and he cannot fathom why anyone would want her as their leader. It’s not that she is a woman. It’s that she is who she is. It’s the liberal victim groups she panders to, the “poor me” attitude that she represents, her inability to give a straight answer to an honest question, his tax dollars that she wants to give to people who refuse to do anything for themselves.

There are many millions of Angry White Men. Four million Angry White Men are members of the National Rifle Association, and all of them will vote against Hillary Clinton, just as the great majority of them voted for George Bush.

He hopes that she will be the Democratic nominee for president in 2008, and he will make sure that she gets beaten like a drum.

Boortz did this story yesterday. Rush and Hannity did it today. I thought about posting it but figured most everyone had seen it.

But you forget, middle class white men are the only segment of the population (aside from smokers) that is allowed to be openly discriminated against. The rage of a white man is not sacred at all. In fact, how dare you get the least bit upset when all they really want to do is to set things right by "reallocating" some of your ill-gotten gains to those poor sods who are just trying to get their lives back together. You're not supposed to pay any attention to the fact that they're on welfare and have seven children who go to school on your tax dollars already.

Get over it, man. You're white. nobody cares about you. Especially the politicians.

Amen.

I don't even care if the immigrants learn to speak English. Just as long as the emigrate here legally, I'll be happy. No one said we had to have a national language. If they don't want to learn what 95% of this country speaks, more power to them. I wish them luck.

That piece was like a tasty beverage. Refreshing.

+1million

I already vented on this same topic on TFL, going to try to keep quiet this time so the thread won't get closed.

I was forwarded this article this morning, and promptly forwarded it to many people I knew on both sides of the party line. While I would have written the article in a slightly different fashion, I absolutely love what the author had to say.

I live not far from Aspen. For those of you who are unfamiliar, it is a microcosm of ~extremely~ wealthy individuals and families. The private jet ratio per capita would make you ill. It was quite refreshing to see such commentary come down valley from there.

Anyway, a few minutes after forwarding this article I got a knee-jerk response from a colleague who happens to be Canadian. It basically called anyone who thinks this way a "redneck". After I took offense to it, I began stewing, and thinking. The following was my response, and saying it made me feel better.

"I think you may have missed the point. I feel that the article is not
about socioeconomic stratification and labeling. Among other things, it
is about people who want to make their way through life by working hard
for what they have (with the hope of enjoying it) being angry at those
people who think they are "owed" a life (for being born) and want to go
through it collecting handouts from those who pay in. It is also about
the distaste for socialism that many of these hard working people have,
and their disdain for the candidate who embodies it. I suggest that if
an individual wishes to live in a place where the rights of the
collective are held higher than the rights of the individual then they
are free to move there- plenty of countries have adopted this moral
strategy. I personally do not feel that these people should be allowed
to instead change our country in this fashion, as many of the main
pillars of its founding rest on the elevated rights of the individual."

I've been thinking about it all day, and am glad to have a chance to vent a little here. Thanks. :)

It suffices to say that this article hit a resonant frequency in my brain.

I hear that. I could hardly believe it when I read it. As if a wiser, more eloquent me had written it.

Wow, I am in shock that a newspaper printed it. Talk about a no BS to the point article. The sad part is how true to life it is.

Jeez.

That diatribe is so much B.S. I can't believe anyone is falling for it. Every cliche, every stereotype, every hackneyed phrase, every simplistic POV is present in prolific, portentous, pretentious, rhetoric.

If someone wants to write that way, it's OK with me, but to take it seriously...but wait, maybe it's just a spoof in which case....

Brian Williams, thank you for posting that article. It was a truly great read.I sent it to all my contacts of all political and moral persuasions.
-terry is deeply upset as I would expect him to be.That must mean the writer is hitting home even more vigorously than I originally thought.

Priceless! Our man in the great Northwest is really P.O.
However it does appears his man Barack is going to thrash Hillary's posterior before we ever get the chance.

This was posted on THR on Monday and promptly locked by a Mod as OT/political.

However, I consider it to be the finest piece of political prose ever written.

I'm in the unusual position of both agreeing, and being disgusted with myself for agreeing.

Yes, I am angry. Yes, I am white. Yes, I am feeling disenfranchised and marginalized (The article calls them "Victimhood words", but I feel that, too.) I hate "press one for English", and being stereotyped as a bigot whether I am or not. I hate being treated as if I was some sort of oppressor, about to get his just desserts. I agree with most of what that article said.

And yet, I can't help but feel that this whole article, and this feeling that I'm feeling, is racist, sexist, and hateful.

I don't know... I'm pretty conflicted at the best of times, and this really just put me over the edge. That article resonates with me, and I hate it at the same time.

FourNineFoxtrot, don't worry about being conflicted. We all have some dichotomy of opinion in our personalities. This is normal.
Worry about helping to defeat Clinton or Obama in November, probably the greatest internal threats to the continued existence of our Republic since at least the Civil War.
You'll forget about this article by tomorrow.Focus your energy on defeating these Socialists who want to rip away the last threads of what once was a very great country.

Doubt that I'll be much help there, as I'll be voting for the Libertarian candidate, or not at all.

I'm not worried about a healthy amount of doubt or conflict, but I honestly don't know what I believe anymore. Sometimes, I believe exactly what that article says. Other times, I believe it's things like that article that are the problem, or part of it.

Thank you Brian Williams.

That's me.

I am a 36 y/o white male.

And I think this article is ridiculous, stereotyping, and just plain stupid. It kinda makes me...I dunno...angry. And I'm not really sure how it actually fits in with the board's mission. Gun content?

Edit- in fact, after a quick re-read, this is pejorative and definitely not appropriate here. THR will not discriminate against folks, regardless of the sex or gender of the consenting adults they choose as sexual partners. Our mission is to unify shooters, not divide them over trivia.
