Went with my wife and son to the annual family trip to Lake Roosevelt (Columbia River above Grand Coulee Dam). This year is different, he and I will be returning to that part of the state this fall, trying to get his first deer tag notched. I'm pretty excited for us to bring home some venison, and chose that area because the last 4 days of the season, youth hunters are allowed to take buck or doe whitetail.
So, fishing was pretty slow and the three of us took a drive. He needs to see more of the animals we will be hunting. There are Mule deer in that area as well, with different rules for each specie. We saw a couple nice Muley bucks and too many doe to count, of both Whitetail and Mule deer. No Whitetail bucks though.....?? My boy is getting good at spotting and knowing the details to tell one from the other, of course it's much easier if they have antlers!
Spotted a wild turkey hen with a group of babies, less than usual, our wet spring, late summer might be bad for their nesting success.
On the drive home, we were fortunate to spot a good size Black bear on a rocky hill only ~150yds. from the road.
A bit further down the hiway, we stopped and checked out the small herd of Elk that live in the area of Hwy.20 and Mt. Baker. Only the 3rd time I've seen those guys.
Didn't see any Cougar or Rattlers, but I'm okay with that!
