Gents:

I'm thinking about a 20 inch Green Mountain barrel for my Ruger 10/22. Will I need a gunsmith for this, or is it something a handy bloke like myself can do? Also, any other thoughts on this topic will be well appreciated. Thanks!

Best advice i could give is to head over to rimfirecentral. They have pages of very good information.

You'll need a screwdriver and an allen wrench. No gunsmith required. +1 to visiting rimfirecentral. You'll learn more than you want to know about 10/22s.

I did it...with a Green Mountain barrel in fact. If I can, then an average 10 year old could. And yeah, rimfirecentral is a great resource.

A bedded action and first inch of the barrel, minus the barrel band, clearance for the barrel between the stock (removing some material), and epoxying the barrel into the action helps in my experience. I've shot a 10/22 done this way that groups 5 shots into 2" at 100 yards (sometimes less) with the stock stainless carbine barrel and cheap winchester 36gr copper wash jacketed bulk. I should add that these Winchesters were dipped in 200F hot paraffin wax to coat each bullet. Not sure how much that helped since I didn't test the ammo much before and after of course the barrel had been waxed. All I know is that this combination worked! Stock trigger.

I did this a few years ago, and like my gun much better now. Getting the stock barrel out took a bit of work, and you'll want to have some cardboard and a rubber mallet to get the new barrel seated (I did, anyway).

I first had to cut the end of the stock off, just behind the barrel band, then remove a bunch of wood so the unfluted bull barrel would fit. I made sure it was free floated once in place, and it's stayed put nicely.

New 20" Green Mountain barrel, Power Custom trigger, thicker butt pad, and rubber recoil buffer made this gun a vastly different beast than stock.
