Green Mountain Rifle Barrel Customer Service, the good and bad.

Glad to hear it worked out for you, though I'm none too impressed with the way they treated you up to the decision to replace the barrel.

I agree that the company eventually did everything right but it's hard to get past first impressions-all the more reason for a business that wants to have a reputation for offering good customer service to have competent, polite "first responders".

Both of my Anschutz 1911's factory barrels have uniform diameters; no taper.
Mr. Bart, check out the Anschutz M 2007/2013. The rifled portion of the barrel was only 19.5" and the bore tapered from breech to muzzle. I still have one and it was a rather radical concept when introduced, I don't know if it or anything like it is still offered, as I'm out of the smallbore game and not keeping up with the latest and great$$$t.

I think Lones Wigger mentioned that some years ago to me. Anschutz has done different things over the years. Such as shortening their free rifle barrels from 27" to 19" with a bloop tube to get the front sight out where it can easily be seen sharp relative to the target. That was done to reduce barrel time. It proved to shoot better offhand scores as that's when the wobble zone is the biggest. Everyone wants bullets out as quick as possible in position matches.

My 1911 barrels were originally 27", but one was set back then rechambered after 30,000 or so rounds.

I have a simple solution when I buy something and have any concern over having to send it back. I use an American Express Card. Amex customer service is simply outstanding and I have been forced to reverse a charge and tell a vendor if they want their garbage back they need to send return postage and I will go to the bother of getting it sent back.

As long as I am covered by a return guarantee or by a representation of an item that the item failed to live up to, Amex backs me every time.

trouble is an AR shooting a 2 inch group is very common among those that admit to it and I have seen $1500 AR's barely hold 1 1/2 groups. witnessed groups always are larger then unwitnessed ones

I feel sorry for those stuck shooting 2" groups with an AR. Doesn't have to be that way.

so you are saying every AR shoots that way? I have seen 100's that did not and a few that did. you roll the dice when you buy a rifle some win most don't. but it seems on the internet everyone has a one hole group but not at the range with others there

Firstly I said no such thing. Second, I don't mind shooting next to anyone at the range, are YOU saying everyone lies on forums? I shoot 12 months out of the year, rain, shine, wind, and snow with pretty basic equipment. Been doing it for decades, long enough to be a reasonable shot for a hunter.

As for my statement, it was about the sort of accuracy potential of the AR as compared to what some people expect from it. I see quotes about military standards for accuracy and I cringe. There are plenty of manufacturers selling complete rifles with MOA accuracy and plenty of aftermarket barrels capable of the same if guys weren't looking to save $50 by "rolling the dice" on the bargain bin.

My target above was 50 yards, 10 rounds in February in Iowa weather after sighting in with a Leupold Mark AR 3-9X. Those are 1/4" squares. After load development things got better, to the point of my ability which is clearly less than the potential of the rifle.

oh ok it is 50 yds then I thought it was at 100yds. most 1 1/2 rifles will shoot tight at 50 yds. what do you have in the rifle ? like I said I have seen $1500 AR's not get under 1 1/2. I had the top match bushmaster matched barrel and bolt target trigger etc could not get to one inch group called them and they said that is good enough don't send it back. I had a colt AR varmint with 22" stainless heavy barrel did the same thing. after about 5 AR's I got one that shoots good. Rock River Arms to me are the most accurate out of the box

Mr. Bart, that is obviously correct, which of course is why rifles with quick lock time are preferable for position shooting. The point of my post however is that the barrel has a TAPERED BORE, alluding to earlier discussions in this thread about tapered bores. Read back.

$1k plus the scope. Rock River, standard taper 16" barrel. With better eyes or higher magnification or a better rest or in better hands I'm sure the 3/4" groups I'm getting at 100 yards would shrink but that's how it's been since load development.

3/4 groups are excellent and it figures it is an RRA
