Grendel P30

Has anyone here had luck with a Grendel P30? I've heard nothing but problems with them which is disappointing because in theory they'd be a great trail gun. I own one but have never been able to get it to shoot more than one or two shots without a jam of some kind.

Maybe I just need to get rid of it and put the money towards an FN FiveseveN.

I hear they are jam o matics though the idea of a .22mag handgun with a 30 shot mag is interesting.

I would sell it and get a Taurus 941 Ultra-lite 22mag. At 18 ounces you won't hardly notice you are packing it on the trail and power wise it's not that much behind a 5.7x28. Just use 40 grain and over in it. The 5.7 at over a buck a round is pricey to practice with and there have been nasty blow-ups with the FN57. Some have fired out of battery with injury to the shooter.

I actually have a Taurus 941 Stainless with the 4" bbl. Weight isn't really a concern to me, I carry my 6 " Super Redhawk .454 without a second thought. The idea of having a 30 rd clip appeals to me, but not when it is esentially a double shot pistol (shoot twice, clear the jam, and start again.)

Hadn't heard that about the FiveseveN though. What a shame. That seemed like a nice caliber. Of course with ammo prices what they are it'd be way too much to just take plinking.

Grendel P-30 Extractor tuning

I finally bought a P-30 a few weeks ago.
The gun is near mint and was at a great price.
I was eager to try it out so soon as I got it home loaded up the 30 round clip and went at it.
After the first 5 shots with 5 casings stuck in the chamber I knew there was an extractor problem.
With the slide in hand I placed a fired case into the bolt face under the extractor.
The extractor lug didn't come close to fitting behind the rim of the case.
I have reshaped the contours of the extractor and it now holds a fired case.
That helped a lot.
I could get 3-5 rounds off until I had a fired case stuck in the chamber.
I am now experimenting with shims under the extractor spring.
If anyone has a good firing P-30, I would sure like to see some close up pictures of the extractor to case fitting.

Geee I can see many problems without commenting to much. Get the right part for extraction and shoot it with the correct part. Next I am thinking maybe it should be sent to the factory if that is a possibility for you to do.
Contours and extactors are not the same as the cartridge many times and it could be the ejector or the lips of the mag etc.. Since you have carved on the part you need a new one

George Kelgren founded both companies. Sadly, Grendel went under before I had an opportunity to purchase a new P10.

Extractor/Ejector

I am posting here because there is no factory to send the P-30 to and no parts available.
It's obvious most P-30 owners have this extractor problem.
Just asking around for ideas.
Here is another question...
Is the slide of a semi-auto pistol blown back rearward (blow back operation) by the explosion in the chamber or by the recoil of the explosive event?
Sometimes when I fire the P-30, the slide will go rearward and pick up a new round from the magazine and jam it against a fired case still in the chamber.
If the operation is "blow back" the explosion would push the case rearward out of the chamber as the bullet leaves down the barrel in the opposite direction.
So, does the extractor pull the fired case out of the chamber at recoil or does it just hang on to it as the slide travels to the rear, because of blow back, until it gets ejected from the side?

I saw a P10 and a P12 grendel for sale recently. They looked very Kel Tecish. The P10 was only $125.

Why am I thinking the pistol Ram Line made, some sort of .22lr, is also related to these guns?

Extractor/Ejector *update

I have found the biggest cause of my P-30 jamming was the rough cut flutes in the chamber.
I have read the flutes were there to retard blowback and have read they were there to improve blowback.
Since my problem was the case sticking in the chamber after being fired, I tend to think they retard blowback and that isn't what I needed.
After polishing the chamber and reshaping the extractor, so it would hold a case, the gun is now a pretty good shooter!
3 stovepipe jams with the first 30 shot clip.
I think with a little more tuning it should be great.
