i bought a new/used glock 30 a couple weeks ago and the grip fit my hand perfectly. it allows me to just point and pull. no more twisting and turning my wrist to get the sights aligned.

well, i was reading another post about large hands and small grips and saw a suggestion to use electrical tape to enlarge the grip. so, i wrapped the grip on my glock 19 until it felt like the grip on the g30. i just used the finger grooves as a guide and added tape until the grips backstrap fit into the hollow of my palm.

with an empty gun, i dry-fired pulling the trigger back as hard as i could to see if i could pull the sights off line. couldn't pull them off line with my trigger pull so i figured that recoil wasn't going to pull them off line either. i think i was right. as the target shows a 4 inch left/right spread at 34 yards. good enough for me! now to work on my hold and follow-through.

just wanted to share the info and results.

good shootin,

I will 2nd the suggestion to get rid of the electrical tape. As soon as it gets mildly warm the adhesive will get greasy and your wraps will start moving. Also, other than the gooey mess that Danez mentioned, is the possibility that the wraps will migrate and interfere with your mag release.

The silicone tape might work but I would suggest that you look at the pre-made sleeves for glocks first. They will help increase the grip size a bit and should be made so as not to migrate up the grip and interfere with the function of the weapon.

thanks for the tips, guys. i think i'll stick with the tape (no pun intended) as i want to be able to adjust the thickness of the wrap.

Go wet your hands with some water and oil/grease, then see how much you like the grip. That looks like a slippery banana with sweaty hands to me.

The tape I mentioned isn't sticky and since it fuses to itself, you can add additional layers if you'd like.

Also, it isn't slippery lie electrical tape.

It's pretty cool stuff.

danez71, i'm going with your tape suggestion rather than the pre-made sleeve suggested by 98 redline. just got back from walmart with the wrap-fix.

already had to trim the electrical tape to clear the mag release (both sides).

atldave, any suggestions, or are you just trying to make my day?

My goal was simply to point out that you'd better test that grip with sweaty (or simulated sweaty) hands. Trying to get enough grip on the gun is a big deal when shooting outdoor, hot-weather matches, and leads people to all kinds of grip-enhancing solutions. Trying to add size is one thing, but I don't reckon you want to sacrifice grip/friction to do it.

One solution for a gun with slippery grips/spots is to apply some skateboard tape.

If you're trying to build size and then add friction-enhancement on top of it, maybe start with some double-sided tape. Golf grip tape is designed to keep rubber grips glued to smooth metal and graphite shafts at speeds/forces FAR exceeding what a gun grip will ever see; I don't know whether the solvent that is used to activate the glue on golf grip tape gets along with Glock plastic frames, though.

i'll put skateboard tape as a fix if this doesn't work. i'll ask my dad about the golf grip tape as he makes his own clubs.

thx,

That golf grip tape is an interesting idea. I've used tennis racket grip tape on a shotgun forend years ago. It worked surprisingly well. I'm not sure how to wrap it properly around a short pistol grip, though.

Note that I'm talking about the golf tape that goes under grips. It's a double-sided tape with a solvent-activated adhesive. You wet it with acetone or mineral spirits (or gasoline, if you're old-school/stupid) or something similar, and the very tight rubber grips slide on over it... but once it dries, the grips can only be removed by cutting them off. You wouldn't ever try to use the tape itself as a grip surface for play/use.

If you wanted to try it, you'd build up to just shy of the desired thickness/countour with it, spray it with the solvent, then stick your preferred gripping material (such as skateboard tape or sheet rubber) over the top. After 12 hours or so, I imagine that your new grip structure wouldn't slip around no matter how hot or cold the environment.

But I might experiment cautiously. First, without the gun to make sure the golf tape and the intended final/outer layer got along; and then applying a little bit of the planned solvent to a non-critical area of the gun's frame to make sure there weren't any strange reactions.

0130172001.jpg 0130172001a.jpg put the tape on tonight. it is stickier than the electrical tape and, so far, has not pulled apart or started to peel off.

i did a"atldave" test: first i wet the grip and my hand with water - no slipping, next i doused both hands in baby oil and got a fair bit of slipping, mostly rotational. i then wiped my hands and the grip with a paper towel and tried again - no slipping. passed!

as you can see, i have a large palm and short fingers, so a wider grip works for me.

will take the gun out tomorrow for a shooting test.

Cool.

Some of the tackiness does go away but it doesn't ever seem to get to the level of electrical tape.

I actually put some on a Shield just to see what it's like but took it off because I didn't do it right and it was red. But I liked the feel.

Let us know what you think later

Bits of tape won't add much to an itty-bitty, wee, small, tiny grip frame. Dunno if they make one for a 30, but Pachmayr makes a glove for other Glocks. Not stupid expensive either. Don't think they add much girth either though.

just put another thirty five rounds down range with the "new" grip. the extra girth makes all the difference in the world for me. i got a bit fatigued at the end, but kept most of em on the paper. took about ten minutes to shoot all thirty five.

here is a target i shot back in december with the g19 without the grip tape.

so, do you think the grip tape improved my shooting? i see a bit of reduction in group size, but not much. thoughts?
