I just bought a Colt Trooper MKIII... looking for some grips that are thinner than the stock ones... thoughts?

TLH, the Trooper MKIII does not have the same grip frame as the Python. The older Trooper from the 1960's takes the same grips as the Python and OP.

Ian's Dad, when you find your grips be sure they are for the MKIII Trooper, which is a Colt J-frame gun.

That is unfortunate, because that design is probably exactly what the OP is looking for. Most other grips I know of add size.

Another idea: try Herrett's made-to-measure (from a tracing of your hand that you send them) stocks. Herrett Stocks

I have a Trooper that I could never find grips for. I ended up buying a cheap set of used factory-style ones at a gun show, and recontouring them myself to make them slimmer and include palm swells. They feel great now, and even though they're not finished (I plan to stipple them before staining and finishing), I took the gun to the range and shot it with the new grips on. It makes a world of difference. Felt recoil is way down, and the gun stays put in the hand, instead of sliding down in the hand with each shot.

pachmayr grips for colt

pachmayr grips are the only one that makes grips for the colt trooper. I own 1978 6" trooper mark 111 , love my new grips good fit.

thanks to all

i was able to find the pachmeyers... looking like the best option for sure.. are they slimmer than the factory wood grips? i'm thinking they have to be.

I seem to remember not being able to use them for my Trooper because they cover the backstrap. My fingers are a bit on the short side, and it made the trigger reach too long.

Among other who offer grips for the Mark III series Colt's:

Herritt's will semi-custom make them for you. You send a tracing of your hand, and they make them to fit:

Eagle will do custom grips and modifications:

You can modify Badger grips yourself. File and sand to shape, then sand with finer paper and polish with a metal polish:

Hogue grips are usually thinner and better shaped for your hand.
A lot of Colt owners use Hogue's:
