Hello all,

I have a few questions about grips for a S&W 642. I look forward to any feedback.

1. Are there any grips for a S&W 642 that are only slightly larger than the stock grips? I'm looking for something, ideally, that covers the backstrap.

2. Do wood grips increase the felt recoil? Currently I'm using rubber hogue bantam grips.

3. What is the size difference between "Combat Grips" and "Boot grips"?

Thanks!

Wood will increase the slam factor on your hand....bantams are about the best for absorbing recoil....you can find rubber that covers the backstrap but it will increase bulk...chek out www.CDNNinvestments.com they have oversized Sile grips for only 4 bucks...I had them on a model 60 and they worked nicely. the ones on mine are hideout grips from brownells...they are hard nylon and I went with them over rubber since my clothing slides over them and doesn't stick...especially on the ankle....

I have to admit that I have been happy with the stock Uncle Mike's on my new 642; they fit my hand perfectly. I hated the stock grips when I had a Model 60.

Go figure! :)

Combat grips are a little longer than boot grips. Boot grips would have two finger grooves while combat grips have three grooves.

www.hogue.com (have a pair of goncolo alves on my 60.they work great)

I used a pair of Taurus boot grips (off a Taurus 85) on my 642. They work great. They're the same lenght as the S&W boot grips but they cover the back strap. They feel lots better than the factory grips.

You can either remove the grip pin or drill a new hole for the S&W pin. I removed the pin on mine (i drilled a new hole first. I removed the pin as an experiment) and haven't noticed the grips shifting after 200 rounds of mostly +p's.

I removed the Taurus emblem, ground it down, filled it with JB Weld , smoothed it and painted it flat black. Most people think they are factory grips.
