Grips suggestions for S&W 638 J-Frame - few questions also

However can anyone confirm which grips are on the above revolver?

Also can someone ID these grips for me?

I think I like the look of the Badger Grips in Silver/Black the most.

The Badger grips are handsome, but they are, in my opinion, a bit too large for the J frame. They feel great but they negate the small size of the J so that it is no longer useful as a back up or pocket gun.

The Eagle grips are smaller than the Badger grip and for that reason I prefer them to the Badger.

You might check out Craig Speigel's boot grips. They are very nice.

I don't know who made the grips in your third photo, but I really like them. I'd like to have a set. You don't give away anything in size. If you find out who mades them, let me know.

Hello. The grips in question are from Altamount. I am not sure where they can be bought. The picture in question is mine of one of my revolvers and I bought the grips at a gunshow. I have not tried to buy any of these grips on-line so I cannot offer a URL off the top of my head.

If you are going for looks all of the above grips are nice so pick the one you like best. If you are going for function then buy the Badger grips. I have Badger grips on my M640 .357 Magnum and those grips tame the recoil even when firing full house Magnum rounds. Of course the ones I have are full size because I feel they are needed with a .357 Magnum but you can put Badger boot grips on your revolver because it's a .38 Special. (I own and carry a M638 but I like the original Uncle Mike's boot grips that come with the revolver) You can look at them all on the Badger site.

FWIW, I did an order with Altamont about two months ago, and I was entirely satisfied with the direct-contact transaction.

The phone contact for the order was entirely pleasant and straightforward, the old-fashioned way, so to speak. She said it would be about three weeks or so, and IIRC it was closer to four to five. The price, with shipping, was in the low Fifties.

However, the order (boot grips similar to the site picture ArchangelCD posted, but in charcoal ruby) came through perfectly. I'll post a picture sooner or later in this thread....

Highly recommended; if Altamont would expand their site selection and implement a good online transaction system, we could probably find these grips sold more widely than just at gun shows.

Got a set from someone here on the boards! I really like them a lot. There is a small problem with them moving. They slide frontway or backway. Seems like I need to put some rubber behind the rigger under the wood and the frame of he revolver. I'm going to make a another thread concerning this issue also.

If anyone has any ideas let me know. It doesn't matter how tight the screw turns it doesn't tighten it enough up top.

I found mine on fleebay. Most of the time they're just referred to as "S&W grips". I'd like to trade these for an old set of Altamont red durawood grips myself.

I had a similar issue. I took some matches from a matchbook,
cut off the part that burns and put 2 of them
between the front of the frame and the groove
inside the front of the grip. Like a shim.
Not 2 thicknesses, but one above the other.
When I tightened the grips, they no longer moved.
I know it sounds kind of primitive,
but it works perfectly. My grip hasn't moved in 10 years.
