I'm getting married in a few months and I still have no idea what to give my groomsmen. I heard mention of giving an engraved knife. Anyone have any leads on an idea like this? I'd want something relatively inexpensive (keep it under $100, maybe closer to $50). 3"-4" blade, locking folder with clip (like a Kershaw Ken Onion Scallion). Thanks!

The benchmade mini pika

you can find them for about $40, and they are like the Old discontinued AFKs. If you order a few, and you ask, you might get a discount.

I'm still not sure, but I'm thinking I may just have a best man. I got a 17" HI kukuri for him (he doesn't know yet)...

Benchmade Mini-Ambush goes for around $30 online. Part of the "Red" line of Benchmade products, which are made offshore but supervised by Benchmade.

Pretty similar to a mini-Griptilian, with Axis lock and all, but about half the price.

Any of the Kershaws (Scallion, Leek, Chive) would also be pretty dang cool, and those are all under $50. Depending how outdoorsy your guys are, a smaller "gentleman's knife" like the Chive or Scallion might come in even handier than a larger knife.

I really wanted to get engraved derringers for my groomsmen, but my wife wouldn't let me. :(

Something about the cruise ship people and the airlines we had to travel back on not loking them...

DUH! Forgot to mention... I'd want them engraved with their names. Do any retailers provide this service (like if I wanted monogrammed handkerchiefs)? Are trophy shops generally willing to do that kind of work?

I have seen Leatherman Micras used as groomsmen gifts, as well as small SAK's.
Things like that you can have engraved at a place in just about any mall. Around here (MD) it is Things Remembered

yup

Do any retailers provide this service (like if I wanted monogrammed handkerchiefs)?

Things Remenbered, or something like that. You can find them in most malls. They sell cheesey gifts that you can personalize, but they will engrave stuff that you bring in for an extra fee.

Smokey Mountain Knife works offers an engraving service in their retail store. I would think they could do the same thing with an order as well. I have had this done there many times and have been very pleased.

I think the timeless and classic designs of a Case slipjoint are more suited for such a gift. To me modern folders are tools and while they serve a purpose I much prefer the classy look of a traditional slipjoint.

I think 30 yrs from now the Case knife will be far more desireable to the owner than a cheap tactical folder.

I have several modern folding knives and they are all very good but I abuse those knives while I "enjoy" my tradional pocketknives.

15-odd years ago, I gave my best man (my brother) a KBAR that was engraved in the fuller:

"Best Friend - Best Man"

He still has it. "Things Remembered" did the engraving for me for a nominal fee.

How about make them?

Ragweed forge and Thompson knife supply sell Puukko kits that you can put together in a day or two(each). They are like nothing out there, good looking, and a superior design.
The down side may be that folks getting married spend more time picking out color swatches for curtains, china patterns and caterers for the big day.
Good luck.
