Groundhog hunt

I often hunt groundhogs right here in Lancaster County with my 22MAG rifle.

Young ones are good roasted with onions, carrots, and potatoes. Add mushroom soup instead of water to the pan.

Wow, Miss Stana, that is a bunch of ground squirrels!

With that many I can certainly understand why the farmers would pay someone to shoot them.

ground squirrels

AIC,

Now that is cool. What do you shoot them with a .22 LR? How big is a ground squirrel compared to a prairie dog ? Are they in towns so you can set up for a while or are they sparse?
Thanks,

just plain wrong

Alan,
Hi,
I am wrong I guess about groundhogs in Livingston county.
Bought a .17 Went out tonight 2 in first hour. Friend says he sees them daily.
On to some luck. 3rd was shootable but house within 90 degrees of either side.
Only a fool would chance that. On the way home ,only 8 miles saw 2 in bean fields. maybe they have cleaned up they coyotes. Dog hunters killed 30 this winter when they can cut a track and set the dogs loose.
Read the thread on ground squirrels in Nevada. sounds great but how big are they?

Bob,

From the information I have read about the lack of groundhogs, everyone always seems to mention an increase in coyote sightings. In my neck of the woods, S/E Pa., I have only saw one coyote in this area. It was a large female and she was actually doing the same thing a friend and I were doing at the time, "hunting groundhogs".

Her hunt was cut short though when my buddy sent a 70gr. Ballistic tip her way.

The post about the ground squirrels was from Miss Stana, mentioning the amount her husband and daughter shot in a year. I believe they are about the approximate size of a gray squirrel or possibly a little smaller, but I am not totally sure. Maybe someone else can better answer your question for you.

13,000 in a year sure sounds like a lot of fun though, doesn't it!

nevada ground squirrels

Alan,
Yes that sounds great. Ever shot prairie dogs? Bad lands SD down to Valentine Nebraska is loaded with dogs. You bcan set uo 100,200 300 yards out on a town.
Cost of ammo now minimizes the 22.250 so its the .17 now.
Cheers,
Bob

ARW:

That was with my M700 Police, with a fully adjustable Bell & Carlson Tactical stock, .308 Win, with a Nightforce 12-42X56 scope, a 2 ounce trigger, using handloaded 155 grain Lapua Scenars over 48 grains of Varget in former-fired Lapua brass. I got bored shooting at 2.75" steel disks at 300 yards. The total rifle package weighs in right around 18 pounds...very stable.

Edit to say, correct, aim small; miss small.
