Groups target NRA meeting
Gun lobby fights negative attacks
Wednesday, March 31, 2004

By Michael A. Fuoco, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Anyone wondering how a newly formed local coalition opposed to gun
violence feels about the National Rifle Association holding its
annual convention in Pittsburgh next month need only look at the name
of the organization's Web site: GoodByeNRA.org.

Yesterday, the Confluence Against Gun Violence fired the first volley
in what likely will be a battle of ideological banter with the NRA
when it held a news conference in Shadyside and characterized the NRA
as a violent, militaristic, racist, sexist and homophobic
organization.

"Pittsburgh says 'No' to the NRA and the NRA leadership and its
racism and hatred and policies of violence," said Nathaniel Glosser,
president of the Rosenberg Institute for Peace & Justice.

Not surprisingly, Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA public affairs
director, denied such charges.

"Certainly there are groups that are behemoth and shrill in their
opposition to the NRA and certainly this is a mischaracterization of
the NRA," he said from Fairfax. Va.

Glosser took umbrage that the NRA's 133rd annual meetings and
exhibits, to be held April 16-18 at the David L. Lawrence Convention
Center, Downtown, are being publicized on billboards locally as "four
acres of guns and gear."

"A large segment of the community is not happy about that," he said.

"Most NRA members are wonderful people who support responsible
handling of guns," said Kenny Steinberg, president of Pennsylvanians
Against Handgun Violence. "The NRA leadership for some reason is
opposed to laws [requiring guns to be unloaded and locked] and any
reasonable legislation."

Also, speaking against the NRA were Hill Jordan of the Pittsburgh
chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People, the Rev. Greg Swiderski of the Association of Pittsburgh
Priests and, as a private citizen, Dr. Edward Mulvey, a professor of
psychiatry at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

Other groups in the coalition include the Thomas Merton Center, the
Allegheny County Million Mom March and Pittsburgh Stand for Children
Organizing Group.

The speakers said the recent revelation that a 9-year-old boy armed
with his mother's gun accidentally killed postal carrier Clayton J.
Smith at the Crafton-Ingram Shopping Center in June was a tragic
example of why legislation is needed to require adults to be
responsible gun owners.

Glosser said the group plans counter-activities but has no plans to
try to disrupt the NRA sessions. A teach-in will be held April 15 at
the William Pitt Union at the University of Pittsburgh; a candlelight
vigil to remember victims of gun violence will be held the evening of
April 16 outside the convention center; and a rally and concert will
be held there April 17.

The NRA gathering is shaping up to be the largest ever, Arulanandam
said, with more than 55,000 people already registered. Usually, at
this point in the registration process that number would be close to
but less than 50,000, he said.

This year's keynote speaker for the member's banquet has not been
announced, but there is speculation that it will be either President
George W. Bush or Vice President Dick Cheney. Arulanandam said he
could not confirm whether either man would be attending.

NAACP? Really now!

Of all things! Mr. Jordan, it was white men with guns that freed your people from white men with guns. The evil was not the gun, but the criminal intent of the CSA and Slavers in the South.

Instead of protesting the NRA, which was founded by the saviors of the NAACP, the NAACP should be building monuments of gratitude to the Union soldiers and sailors on every street named after Martin Luther King in America and taking their kids to NRA certified instructors so that the people of the NAACP are never enslaved again.:fire:

I was going to ask how to get a link to BlackManWithAGun's section on the racist history of gun control, but all I get is a copyright notice at his site.

It would be good reading and should be forwarded to all members of the NAACP.

"The NRA leadership for some reason is opposed to laws [requiring guns to be unloaded and locked] and any reasonable legislation."

:banghead: An unloaded and locked gun is a very expensive and intricately designed paperweight. Kinda like alcohol-free beer. Or fat-free doughnts. Very unappealing. :banghead:

No offense, but I think the chances of George Bush addressing the NRA convention are between zero and none.

...characterized the NRA as a violent, militaristic, racist, sexist and homophobic organization.
Common tactic of those who have nothing substantial to add to a debate: start right off the bat with the unsubstantiated demonization insults.

Re: the 'violent' NRA

Well, they do call my house for donations too often. But to their credit they've never threatened me with violence for not giving more :D

"Confluence Against Gun Violence." Hmmm, rhymes with flatulence. Sounds like it, smells like it too.

From past experience with anti-violence "leaders" such as this, you can usually find that one or all of the groups they are Executive Poo-Bah of are paying them something. Sometimes all those somethings add up to a pretty good income.

Often, too, those positions don't require seven days a week defending the lines. A candlelight vigil here, a press release there, a call to corporations for money to combat "gun violence," and--voila--you're making a pretty good buck for accomplishing zilch.

The difference between Mr. Glosser and prostitutes may be that, when prostitutes are lying down, they're working.

The usual line up of left wing weenies. They can't win on the facts so thye make things up and cast aspersions on people. Enlightened aren't they,eh?
Sheesh! What a bunch of losers!

You can't legislate common sense. There's no way someone "accidentally" kills another person. It takes one seriously sick 9-year old to shoot a random mailman with a gun...

characterized the NRA as a violent, militaristic, racist, sexist and homophobic organization.

"Pittsburgh says 'No' to the NRA and the NRA leadership and its

What are they talking about? NRA was founded by former union officers first of all. Second there are many minorities in shooting sports including NRA including me. NRA does not advocate "militarism" or violence against anyone but teaches self defense. Homophobic? This is pure stereotyping and demagoguery.

"Most NRA members are wonderful people who support responsible handling of guns," said Kenny Steinberg, president of Pennsylvanians Against Handgun Violence. "The NRA leadership for some reason is opposed to laws [requiring guns to be unloaded and locked] and any reasonable legislation."

Don't speak for us you blathering sanctimonious dimwit, your resonable regulation means prison for you having a bayonet lug on your gun and stupidity like that. This person is trying to soften the words for NRA mainstream members but he is just as bigoted against gun owners as the others.

...characterized the NRA as a [...] homophobic organization.
Yup. That'd be why the Northern Virginia chapter of the Pink Pistols holds the "shooting" part of many of their gatherings at the range AT THE NRA HEADQUARTERS. While at least some members are wearing the Pink Pistols logo on their shirts.

Oh, yes, and this is also why the ROs at the NRA range allowed a photographer from the Washington Blade[0] to take pictures of PP members shooting at the range.

Those wacky homophobic NRA people...
