anybody know anything about this rifle? how good a shooter is it? how acurate? is it k31 acurate or Russian 91/30 acurate? Guardia Civil Spanish Mauser - Cal. .308 Win

some say that you will either batter the locking lugs or stretch the reciever(basicly same thing) if you shoot alot of NATO ball in these rifles because they are made on old small ring mauser actions. The one I had worked fine but at the time I didn't know much and would have thought headspace was anew band or something.

It's a small distinction...perhaps an important one. Military rounds actually are held to LOWER max. pressure than civialian .308's. Not that we know what the actual pressure of any ammo is, and it's obvious (from performance/velocity) that at lest some 308's are not loaded near max....but the fact remains that the pressure limits for NATO is lower than the limits for commerical hunting ammo.

Now...i can't vouch for military .308 from any non-nato country (for that matter, who knows what their standards and practices are for any ammo), but at least the stuff with the Nato stamp is going to be held within narrower (and loer) presure limits than commercal stuff.

Strength vs. safety. Doubt a '93 will start come apart any sooner than a '98, but that a '93 has less of safety factor (due to no safety lug and a few things dealing with esccaping gas).

Lets put it another way...if I remove the safety lug from a '98's, did the action really get weaker? It got less safe, and is MORE likely to puff gass into your face, or blow the bolt out, but it's not really definitively weaker.

I've got one of those rifles. Kicks like a mule. My only problem is that the front barrel band keeps skipping forward when I fire it, so i have to hammer it back down while at the range  .

As for accuracy with it, it's pretty dang good, IMHO. I've actually shot it at a distance of 500 yards--why? Because I could. Shooting at half-gallon milk jugs with iron sights at that distance is a challenge, I'll tell you that. I didn't hit one, but I was only off by a consistant 10 inches (or so my spotter tells me)--try adjusting for 10 inches at 500 yards with open irons. A guy watching me shoot said "well, that'd still be a chest shot) :D . Granted, I was in a match, and guys shooting their weatherbys were missing by the same margin as I with my $100 gun, and they had scopes :neener: . Other than the mysterious barrel band problem, I think it's a great gun. HOWEVER, I don't use commercial grade .308--I use surplus 7.62 NATO most of the time, due to the whole pressure issue. Last time I think i bought Algerian/Albanian/Asomething-made ammo. If you want to know anything else about the gun, feel free to PM me.

I have a small ring Spanish Mauser.

Shot one and a half foot groups at 50 yards, so I slugged the barrel and found the barrel was cut large at .312, so I reloaded for it using bullets for the Russian 7.62x39. With bullets the proper size for the barrel, it is very, very accurate.

If you reload, its a nice rifle.

Tough as nails, according to a Guns and Ammo article with HP White labs testing them to destruction. Would love to get one someday.

thanks for the info guys samcogloval has them for like $109 so it was tempting but i think i am gona go with a k31 for now.
