Welcome to THR.

The way I read you, something small and light is in order due to the heat and humidity.

My first thought is a Glock 23. Larger caliber, high cap, not too big, durable against the elements (ie. sweat). You could get one as a police trade-in within your price point.

Another thought is maybe one of the surplus Sig P6's that have been going around. These are great guns and easily within your price point. Downside is that as a 9mm it may not meet your caliber requirements.

Maybe an H&K USPc in .45. Those are pretty spendy though and certainly won't meet your price requirements.

And of course the Springfield XD. Pretty much on par with the Glock. Comes in a variety of sizes and calibers.

Or a CZ 40B. Probably doesn't meet your concealability requirements, but it is a new CZ that definitely fits your caliber and budget requirements!

I got mine for $289 from CDNN, and it is sweet.

Taurus titanium protector.

That's a lightweight 5 shot 357.

easy to shoot...packs a whalup. Conceable.

Not sub $400 but Glock 27 is incredibly concealable and I shoot mine very well.

I think some assumptions can be made. For example...

* He pretty much says he'll carry it. As such, common carry calibers can be assumed.

* He gives a budget, so that narrows the field considerably.

* He says he favors larger calibers, so of common carry calibers, we can assume, say, .45 ACP, maybe .40S&W, and .357 and .44 magnums are a also possibility. 10mm maybe.

* He gives his location (FL), so we can assume hot and muggy conditions. This can narrow the field even more being that some guns are more comfortable in general than others.

My apologies to the OP and good faith contributors to the thread for my part in allowing the thread to wander off topic.

To the OP... it does occur to me that you might also want to look at Kahr. I don't have one, but people do seem to like them for concealment. They'd likely hit your price point as well.

I'm wearing an FNP9-m in a Comp-Tac M.T.A.C. holster designed for the USP 40 right now, in shorts and a t-shirt. It is very comfortable, totally concealed, carries well because it is nice and short (top to bottom, not end to end) and in a very capable SD caliber (124+P HST, other mag is 147 HST) and it holds 15+1 rounds in a small package. Great gun, great holster, great belt (gunner's alley). Don't skimp on your belt and holster or you will pay the price of discomfort, awkwardness and inadequate performance on the concealability side. Plus you will eventually spend far more than you have to, since you will eventually get a good holster but you will try out three four five six or more crap holsters first before realizing how correct everyone saying "get a good holster" was. I did it. I bet everyone on this thread has done it, and I bet most of the people on the board did it when they started carrying.

For a lower cost high-quality holster maker, both FIST-inc.com and Comp-Tac get my nod, they make my favorite holsters, and Comp-Tac is incredibly fast.

Both manufacturers make holsters to order.

Yeah I love my Glock 27 and a 23 was going to be my next gun, but I got waylaid by a 40B and the FNP.

new concealed carry weapon...

Hi
before you buy a new handgun, read over the laws/rules at www.handgunlaw.us or www.myflorida.com if you are new to concealed firearms/handguns. The FL Div of Licensing can mail you free forms/use of force guildlines/etc. :D

For south FL, I'd get a j-frame .38spl DA or DA only revolver, like the Taurus CIA or a S&W model 638. If you want a small pistol and have the $$$, check into a SIG Sauer DAK P-239 or a HK P-2000sk LEM in either 9mm or .357sig. The .357sig would be best for CC/protection. Note; you can also buy a CrimsonTrace lasergrip for the SIG P-239 DAK model. That can help with training and/or deter a violent attack.

What you decide to buy, train often with it, clean it, keep it secure.
Take care of your weapon(s) and they will take care of you. ;)

A good SS K frame S&W in .357 - used of course, pre IL.

Find a used 1911, comander size and keep it oiled.

The $400 limit is confining, but it'd doable. Check Gunbroker from time to time.

This guy has deals, check him out. I hear good things about doing business with him.

For your price range (similar to mine) I carry a Sig P6. Its 9mm, 8+1 capacity, and living in TX and AR, its hot and muggy a lot, and I carry regularly in shorts and a t-shirt. The 9mm thing can be overcome with good defense ammo, and the gun will take +P ammo. I don't worry about not stopping the threat. Plus ammo is cheaper so you can spend more time at the range honing your accuracy.
