Can anyone tell me when gun blueing was introduced? As well as shooting on the range, I do western and ACW re-enactment and I would like my weapons to be period correct. I have a Uberti 1851 Navy and a Pedersoli Tryon plains rifle replica, based on a design from 1845. Would these models have been blued or would they have been " in the white" when originally produced?

Blued. Some soldiers polished their guns with brick dust and cotton. That removed the bluing.

However, I don't think they did this to revolvers and that era plains rifle would have been blued or browned. With a plains rifle, are you portraying militia or the 66th Illionis, aka Birge's Western Sharpshooters.

As a bushwhacker, you'd especially want to leave the blue on.

I am beginning to think that a college should offer history credits for reading the threads in this forum. You folks are amazing! Is there anything you don't know? Proud to be a member! Cannonman

When you see a real gun, not a replica, the bluing looks like there was very little rust when the phosphoric acid was applied, so it Is a very light blue.

So, forget the acid step where you rust the **** out of it, just use the bluing on a relatively clean white barrel
