do any of you feel self conscience when transporting your guns, like from home to the range? i do. I don't like walking to my car with a case that looks like a gun case.

when i was shooting only pistols, i got around it by using a wal-mart gym bag as my shooting bag. i would have my pistols in soft pistol pouches inside the locked bag, but it would look like i was just going to workout.

but now i have a 870 shotgun and i can't fit it in the bag. i would like a hard case, but most look like rifle/shotgun cases. i think the fact that they are so long makes them stand out like a sore thumb. any suggestions? i am on a budget.

one of our moderators, (I'll let him out himself on this one) uses a golf bag. So when he goes shooting he tells his roommates he's headed to the 'range' (which he is...kinda). The old, hear hoof beats thing horses not zebras holds true once again.

Well, these days I don't feel self-conscious; I feel proud!

For a long spell though, I lived in California where the general public isn't interested in firearms unless they are the kind who want to steal 'em.

Lots of times I transported long guns in a hard-sided guitar case. An old Fender case works well.

Waller Soft Safes. They were designed for the FBI so they could transport their rifles and SMGs innocously. They float, are lockable and are FAA-certified for transport in a plane, yet they don't scream GUN! They aren't cheap, but it's likely to be the only soft case you'll need again.

I remember seeing a nice hard case in MidSouth Shooter Supply that didn't look anything like a gun case. I'll try to find it if you're interested.

Loading up for a full-aspect trip to shoot, & I'm carrying out stuff that just cries "GUNS!" We don't worry about that here.

But, for many areas, a bit of urban camoflague may be in order.

One of the cheapest, pro bliss-ninny things I've seen is a stacked golf bag with about 8 rifles in it. An attendant gym bag (holding assorted magazines, etc.) only rounded out the package.

Very discrete.

All told though, in any place that you can = be overt & scream "I've got a gun!"

Let the cops come to the 911 "man with a gun-thing!" & let 'em deal with it.

Last I heard, a false arrest/violation of civil rights is a cool $1/4 million lawsuit. You might even afford that MP5 you've lusted over. ;)

\Besides, with CCW being more 'n more commonplace, it's time we all come out of the closet & publically state that "Yes Sir/M'am, I [I[do[/I] have a gun, - & so?"

Many years ago some sage mentioned that the word is more mighty than the sword. Very true & time that we use our words to show that we will not be pacified, that we are not a threat, nor shall we denied our right to possess (even openly) firearms.

Gotta drive this thing home - in time - with more 'n more "public exposure" so the sheeple come to know this as commonplace.

I only use a gun case to transport my rifles on commercial aircraft. Don't do this too often, either.
My case is rectangular, bears no SPEER, NRA or HORNADY stickers to advertise its contents.
For some time, I've been meaning to stencil, CORE SAMPLES - FRAGIILE! on it. Who the heck wants to steal a long tube of dirt?
I've also ... heh heh heh ... been tempted to stencil ACME RECTAL THERMOMETER CO. on the case, just to see what kind of looks I get in the airport. Bet I see a lot of cringes!

" ... to stencil ACME RECTAL THERMOMETER CO. on the case, ... "

Gotta love THAT!

Certainly has its place for commercial travel - until travel with firearms is again acceptable (It once was, ya know?) - & just to make the ninnies "unconfortable" with their own assesments ....

My 870 with a 28-inch barrel fits in a soft takedown case and the entire thing fits in a little GI laundry bag.

I'm more concerned about somebody recognizing GUNS in the back of the wagon and kicking out a window to get them.

Guitar case. I know an SKS will fit in a standard acoustic guitar case - that's how I transported mine when I lived on campus. A little foam and spare time can make a guitar case into a nice rifle case.

"This is the entire reason I bought a sedan"

Got too many guns and stuff to fit in a trunk smaller than a Crown Vic. :)

I also have a green nylon zippered cover from Cabela's for a double-rifle hard case. I really bought it because it has a shoulder strap and I have to hump all my junk out to the back alley or down the steps to the street. Then there's unloading it all at the range and toting it to the firing line.

And I like my AWD Forester with limited-slip rear differential. My last Subaru wagon made it 14 years before all the surf fishing rusted it out.

It depends on where I'm living. When I lived in the 'burbs with a lot of bleeding hearts, I had a long driveway so people rarely saw me loading up for a day at the range or unloading from a day's adventures.

When I lived inan apartment complex, I tried to be very discreet because there were a variety of people living very close to me that would also know my daily habits. It was easier to break into the apartment than a house so I was careful what I brought out of my apartment or brought in when people were out in the neighborhood.

You might want to look at guitar/bass cases at a music store or a 'keyboard' case. I heard someone being pretty successful with that. They put some various musician type stickers on it and no one was the wiser.

I currently use small duffle bags that are padded for going to the range.

You might grab a duffel bag with a tennis racket holder on it, then pick up a tennis raquet at a garage sale and stick that in there. If anyone asks about your tennis game, just say that you're terrible and learning.

Good luck.

I had a cop once comment that he nabbed a gangbanger on a weapons charge for carrying an SKS in a guitar case.

Of course he wasn't on his way to the range or anything.

Yeah, but like dghboy315 I live in Md where its best to stay quiet storm about gun ownership. (at least in Baltimore/Washington Metro areas).

I use the original cardboard box my Mosin Nagant came in. Its just generic enough that it doesn't scream "GUNNNNN".

thanks y'all.

i really like the golf bag idea. i have the perfect one in storage. it's my old soft, travel golf bag. it was my first bag when i started up golf. i'll try to post some pictures if i can figure out how to do it.

no, no, no

i'm just a poor student. my dad pays for the golf. it's really the only time we hang out. if i had a choice, i would rather be on the shooting range than the golf range.

No, I don't have issues with hauling 3 or 4 gun cases to the truck. But I also don't make any side trips to or from the range where I would have to worry about someone seeing what they recognize to be a gun case and then having security issues.

Pelican cases are nice, but they seem to invite pilfering since they are padded and waterproof which tend to make BGs wonder what is so valuable.
