Pelican cases are nice, but they seem to invite pilfering since they are padded and waterproof which tend to make BGs wonder what is so valuable.

Maybe if you stenciled on it:

"Urine Samples - Fragile"

Or, maybe:

"Animal Organ Specimens"

Be sure to check your state's regs. In WI, the law states a case must be designed for firearms, and closeable. (A gun sock that ties would be considered the legal minimum.) While a Desantis Guuny sack would be a legal transport case, (not carry in WI ), a regular fanny pack would be illegal. (In WI.) Better to find out first, than the hard way.

The best one I've ever heard of (and one I'd llike to try out) is using a bag like what baseball players carry their gear in. The ones I've seen have a long pocket-like extension where the bat goes, and also have a cargo area for shoes, gloves, etc. That would be just about perfect...

Hostpitals have these boxes that they use for night pickup of lab specimins. They just leave them outside their entrance all night to be picked up without fear of them being tampered with by theives. WHy is this? Because they bear a sticker saying "contains no drugs, only human specimins/exrement". I could fill one of those things with diamonds and have no worry about it wandering off.

I had a cop once comment that he nabbed a gangbanger on a weapons charge for carrying an SKS in a guitar case.

I think you have to at least look the part to some degree. Some demographics just dont look right with an acoustic guitar case.

Brownells sells a ballistic nylon cover for a traditional aluminum airline gun case. I just bought the cover and skipped the case. It has handles and a zipper. It will hold more rifles in soft cases than I can carry, or four of the Docksil type single rifle hard cases. Looks like a large gym bag.

I took a softside guitar case (fender strat case) and a block of 2x6, and a couple pieces of 1/4" plywood and made a FINE case for my SKS...

the 2x6 was "rounded" into the shape of the bottom 4" of a fender strat, then dished out (to create a 1" thick "fake" strat...

then the plywood was glued and screwed to the sides, and shaped to match...

then the inside pocket of the thing was lined W/ felt... and the SKS slides neatly into the felted pocket, and is strapped into the neck straps...

the pockets on the case hold loaded mags and stripper clips, and the thing has a hand strap, or nice comfy SHOULDER straps!... all for less than 30 bucks!

Guitar/bass gig bags can be had for a mere $20. If you haggle at Guitar Center, I know for a fact that they can go down to $11 on the cheapest they have. Perfect for a cheap beater rifle or two.
