gun cleaning question

Is it bad for your handgun to wait two days to clean it after shooting it? I am referring to a Sig P220

Its best to clean soon, but as long as you are using non-corrosively primed ammo, you should be fine. I have heard about many guns going for days, weeks, or longer before cleaning. I would do it at your earliest convienience.

I plan to do it ASAP it's just the I shot yesterday and forgot that I don't have any cleaning patches. I don't have any money at all until tomorrow so I can't buy any patches till tomorrow. Hence my dilema. I only shot about one hundred rounds through it.

No problem. There's no overwhelming need to clean soon after shooting. Smokeless powder and non-corrossive primers are pretty benign.

I do try to clean after each range trip.

Actually I solved my own problem. I did a search here in the forums and found a post about how you can make patches out of an old cotton shirt. I just cut a bunch of squares out of one that was 100 percent cotton and I have already cleaned them. Thanks for the info though gentlemen.

One small addition, tho the thread has about served its purpose .........

I do recommend that any gun left a while for cleaning (I often do!) ... if blued .... does at least get a wipe over with Rig, CLP etc .. purely cos sweat etc from handling can induce a very rapid flash rust effect.

hmm, CLP eh? what about a silicone cloth? I notice that when I go shooting in this hot weather, that i get a funky finish on my guns after I'm done (sweat, dirt, etc)...and I usually wipe them down with a silicone cloth. Should i be investing in a jar/bottle/tube/can of CLP instead?

You're supposed to clean them? ha.ha....

(With modern ammo, it shouldn't harm them.)

I clean all my handguns immediately after returning
home from the range; especially my blued SIG
P-series self-loader's. Heck, I even clean stainless
steel Smith & Wesson revolver's upon entering my
home!

No. Just to be sure, I took my SIG Sauer P220 Tu-Tone to the range on Saturday and fired 600 rounds through it. I didn't clean* it until Tuesday just so I would be able to tell you honestly that it isn't a problem for the P220 so long as you're using non-corrosive ammo.





*I did run a Bore Snake through it from magazine well to muzzle three times before loading it with my carry ammo for the trip home.

Have we met? You sond like you're reffering to me...

Mine get a good wash ever 500 to 600 rounds or so, when I think about it. I do a half-??? cleaning when I get home from the range (pull slide off, wipe the rails with my tshirt, oil, reassemble, two passes with the boresnake). Thats just with my 1911s. My ruger doesnt get cleaned, even after ~1500 rounds...

I've purposely let my HS2000 go about 2 months and 700 rounds w/out cleaning just to check reliability. It still worked great, but the mag release started becoming difficult to push with one thumb.
