The collective wisdom of THR has always come through for me so far, so here I am again. It looks like I'm going to be moving from Milwaukee to Madison this summer, though still working in Milwaukee (at least until I can find something in Madison). I just recently discovered the joys of shooting, and, as I was warned on this very site, I'm hooked. So I'm looking for a gun club to join, and I'm hoping some people on here are familiar enough with the area to give me some ideas.

I own one pistol (Steyr M9) and one rifle (Mosin M44), so I'd like a place to shoot both. I'm going to be commuting for a while yet, so someplace that has decent evening range access is pretty important.

A club involved in competitive shooting would be beneficial. Though I haven't yet really decided whether I want to shoot IDPA, IPSC, or just keep plinking, I'd say odds of me wanting to get into competition are pretty high.

Harder to define, but still worth noting, is the general atmosphere: a club that's relatively novice-friendly would be good.

The only organization I'm aware of around Madison is the Stoughton club. A couple friends of mine belong, so I've been on the ranges. The only drawbacks are that the indoor range doesn't allow jacketed rounds (finding bare lead rounds in 9x19mm has proven to be...interesting), there's no access past 4:30 on weekends, and some crackpot complaint a little while back made them redesign their outdoor ranges in some...silly, for lack of a better euphemism, ways (shooting a rifle inside a plastic tube makes an interesting sound. Ridiculous, but interesting).

Anyway, I just thought I'd ask around on here - any thoughts you've got are much appreciated.

The only club where you can shoot a centerfire rifle in Dane County is the Stoughton Conservation Club. Just go ther at 7PM on the second Monday of the month and you will have a 45 minute class on safety and club rules and then your a mamber.
