Cold blues darken steel.
Depending on the metal and how well you clean it, cold blues will produce colors from a smoky gray to a reasonably blue color.
This is not a very durable finish at all, and it's not really suited for re-bluing an entire gun or even very large areas.
Where it's at it's best is as a method of coloring and making scratches and small worn areas less noticeable.
Brownell's carry most of these that are any good.
