I plan on going on my first boar hunt next spring and I would like some feed back on what to take. I'm trying to decide between my S&W 1000 semi-auto 12 gauge or my custom 1903A3 .30-06 loaded with a 200gr. RN. I've also had the AK-47 in 7.62x39 suggested. Would one use a FMJ or JHP with the AK?

I'll entertain all suggestions because hell I may get to go buy a new gun out of the deal.

7.62x39 is a hog killing round

either hp or fmj is fine. I prefer a soft fmj. You can take the AK anywhere. I once took a friend hunting(he took a 30-06) and we ended up tracking some hogs into a swamp. We couldn't see behind the high brush, so when we parted the weeds to find 5 large hogs about 6 six feet away. I had a 30-30 and wished I had my SKS or 12 ga pump.

Brush Hunting(swamp) -> 12 with slug or 00 buck
Open field-> 30-06

If you don't know where you are hunting take an AK or an SKS. I always start in an open field and endup in the swamp.

Note is better to have a 12 ga slug and 200 yards, than a 30-06 and 2 feet.

P.S.-Unless your 30-06 is a BAR :evil:

FWIW...

you'll probably get a ton of answers, but I think it really depends on where and what type of hunting.

Dogs...anything. I have a friend in Florida that started out with rifles, went down to slugs, and ended up using knives. More sport than Im looking for, but you'd have to know him.

Spot and stalk in brush/swamp...probably slugs would be great.

More open areas (Tennessee farmland, more arid Texas), rifle

Buckshot is OK on small hogs but not so good if you run into a big boy

My favorite would be a lever 45-70. Flat enough for field work and fast enough for close stuff. Very large boars are exceptionally tough, especially the plate on the side behind the front leg.

There's a hog hunting forum at http://www.huntamerica.com
