She likes the Ruger SP101 but I don't know what I should get, the 357 mag or the 38 spl. She doesn't like a lot of recoil, hench the 38 spl.
I would like the 3/1/16" barrel, but Buds doesn't have that one on thier site in 357 mag.
I think I would like to get the 357 mag and one could shoot 38 spl as I do in my Blackhawk 357.
Thoughts? This would be a range/ nitestand gun.:)
Thanks for any input.:)

You need to get the one that fits her best. You can go with the 101 just make sure it has the right grip for her. Also experiment with the various lighter weight models out there now.

As you say it the 101 sounds excellent. I like the idea of getting the 357 and only loading 38s. I myself have a 357 I only load with 38 +P since most 38s out there cant take +P for too many shots.

My daughter likes her sp101 .357, but she shoots mostly .38s in it. She likes my old 2" S&W M10 better. Maybe you could find a good used M10 and if not you still can't go wrong with a sp101.

My wife had a S&W 637 .38 special +P for about 2 years and she never liked it. Its light weight did not adequately absorb the recoil. I purchased a Ruger SP101 .357 magnum for myself; I took my wife to the range and let her put some .38+P through it. After about 50 rounds I realized two things. She is much more accurate with it and she enjoyed shooting it more. I gave it to her and she uses .38 Specials to avoid recoil.

This is wifes first centerfire, she saw my little Kahr PM9 and we went to the range to "Check her out" on it. I NEVER had any problems with FTF/FTE , put the thing in her hand and it became a "Jam-O-Matic" :scrutiny:

As hard as she tried to hold it firmly enough to cycle reliably the more frustrated she became. She calmly puts the Kahr down on the range table, picks up the little bodyguard and proceeds to center punch the 7 yard target with 5 rounds of glaser safety slugs , for emphasis she puts the last round between the eyes of the police target!

WooHoo! I get to keep my Kahr! I don't think she will be wanting to change her EDC handgun anytime soon, as a matter of fact this was the first time she had ever shown any interest in anything other than the little Smith.

She can quickly and easily load it with a speed-loader, it has zero mechanical doo-dads safeties, mag release, slide stop knobbies to "Worry" about, K.I.S.S

Dont get me wrong ladies, she can operate and shoot her MKII Ruger and any of my 1911's and Glocks with the best of them. She is however smart enough to know that this one is her "Reflex" gun and to change that for no good reason would be silly. It remains her favorite for all the right reasons as it did 10 years ago. I would recommend it for ANY new or experience female shooter. Heck, I have one of my own and will on occasion throw it in my front pocket instead of my P3AT. I never feel "Under gunned" with a .38 and a couple of speed loaders full of either Corbon/Glaser rounds. The paper puncher wadcutter loads are a kitten out of this little gun. I have a set of Spegel boot grips on mine but the Mrs. likes the factory panels

My choice for a "Night table" gun is a Benelli Nova 20 Ga Pump shotgun with 18" barrell and Surefire XD300 light on a grip switch. The bodyguard is for jacket pocket, pocketbook. Oh, I forgot to tell you a funny one; She has been known to "Rack the action" when I have been out with the boys and did not want to wake up. Let me tell you, its waaaaayyy better than an alarm clock. The first time she did it I freaked out and wanted to know what the hay was going on? I reminded her, "She who laughs first, not always laughs last" :D I shot her in the leg with my taser the next day, she has nearly quit "Racking the shotgun" and has promised to "Tase" me when I least expect it, she is 50 and I am 45, we are like a couple of mischevious teenagers sometimes. Where is that FedEx guy with my 12 GA. bean bag rounds! Seriously though...

She is damned proficient and confident in the little revolvers operation and POI. She has fired it at night in the pitch black darkness and knows what to expect in low/no light, can reload by "Feel". Maybe I will get her a Crimson Trace laser grip for it to "Accessorize" it properly :D

Man, you shore got a purdy gun!

If it's just a range/ nightstand gun, why get the compact? My GP141 doesn't have any recoil issues, and fires an extra round.

If you buy a SP101 I would also suggest buying it in .357 Magnum over a .38 Special. It's always nice to have a choice.

I agree with the above post, a 3" GP100 would make a very nice carry gun for your wife. It's not much heavier than the SP101 but will absorb the recoil better. You also get the added advantage of 6 rounds over 5 in the SP101. Just another option to think about.

I can tell you that light 158grn mags in my 3 inch SP101 were easier to shoot than 130 grn fmj .38s were in my old Airweight Smith. It does recoil more but its no where near as painful to the hand.

Just get the .357 and load it with good .38s.

Thanks everyone for all your info, it is much appreciated.
She shoots my Blackhawk with 38 spl. I load, and with WWB 38 spl.
And she likes the feel and looks of the SP101, and you know looks for a women means alot, hehe.
I think we will go with the .357 mag., and we will take a look at the SP100 also.
Thanks again for all your help.
