My wife has a model 60 but still doesn't like the amount of felt recoil. I was wondering if there would be noticeably less felt recoil if she used an alternative to the .38 spl loads, such as .38 colt (long or short). And while we're on the subject of milder loads, how common is the use of .44 russian in a .44 magnum (instead of .44 spl) for the same reason?

You need to reload! You can make some low velocity plinking loads in the proper cases for waaaay less than you are going to pay for .38 Colt, .44 Russian or any other off the wall caliber.

In both cases near zero. If you can not achieve what you desire with .38 Special wadcutters, I'd consider a bigger (heavier) gun, or: the new Taurus .380 snub, a.22 snub, maybe a kit gun ?

You can fabricate the cases by simply trimming but you are not left with a lot. These calibers fell out of favor for a reason.

Many modern 38S&W cases will fit in modern 38 Specials, you can try that but I'd try the wadcutters first. She's better off breaking shirt buttons with a .22 than scraping ribs or punching holes in the sky with anything else.

Try a different revolver. A M32 in .38S&W was considered a woman's revolver for years, back in the day.

Possible a nice old hand ejector in .32S&W. You can find these in near new condition, they are a pleasure to shoot if you prefer low recoil.

I second the idea of the 32 long. Recoil milder than a 38 and still better than a 22. Can find them on the used market either in an older model 31 or a newer 432.

Have you tried having her shoot 38Special through a larger frame revolver. Gun weight reduces felt recoil. Rubber grips will also make her shooting experience more pleasant.

You can't get much weaker than standard velocity ho-hum "plinker" ammo in .38 Special. It's pretty anemic.

I think getting grips to fit her hand may be the first area to look at. ;)
