Gun for the Bench?

Easy, a black stainless government model with either a picture of the scales of justice, the statue of blind justice, or a gavel etched into the grips. Now that's class.

One of the new .45 thunder ranch revolvers from s&w would be smooth too..

Interesting

Seems like when you ask real gun folks, most agree with the Judge, as I do.
My personal favorite comment?
Quote from Taliv:
"get a colt "Big Government" model"
:D :D :D

That serbu would make an interesting statement. Though I wonder what it would look like w/ a Knoxx Cop Stock.

anyway... I'm guessing that the opinion of the judge on what is classy would not include any polymer pistols.

So, the only HK you could have would be a P7 series... which are really good looking.

Sigs are nice... Especially a stainless model with wood grips... but any sig would work... especially the Equinox line.. or an X-five... but the X-five really wouldn't be practical.

1911's are nice... but depending on the type of threats you expect you might face... the capacity may be an issue. Unless you got a STI or SVI model... but then you could have it in 9mm, 40sw, or 45acp.

A nice wheel gun would be nice too.

After you get the gun decided on... you will need to draw up another thread to discuss what accessories (light, laser, etc).

I just wonder what the judge would say if you came in w/ a suppressed pistol.

just remember to unlock the locker every time you sitdown, making the mistake of not doing so will not grant you the time to unlock it when troulbe strikes

As a sworn officer of the court, would you not be allowed to carry?

Roy Bean

What did Judge Roy Bean carry?

I think that you have to be comfortable with the gun for its intended defensive role. THEN, you can worry about garnishment.

I like the 239 or 1911 with wood grips.

That is not my 1911, that is one from the 1911forum. From what I can see it has ivory grips, night sights(Look into those), de horned edges (Very comfortable while you're fondling it). For a 1911 I would have some custom work done on it, Trigger job(3 and a half, 4 and a half pounds), polish the feed ramp (for hollow points and reliable loading). Get a barrel bushing that fits, fit the hood to the slide and I'd go with a .004 slide/ reciever fit. Any closer than that and it will foul up faster than Germany took Poland.(Sorry I had to :) )

Good luck,
-Ken

California has a "JUDICIAL PERMIT", for judges that is very easy to get and is good for four years.

Let me repeat what has already been said: Congratulations.

I also think you need something classy. 1911 with wood, ivory or stag grips. Revolver with wood, ivory or stag. Even a Colt SAA or similar would be nice and classy. Hi-Powers and to a lesser degree CZs with wood grips may work.

Keep in mind it may sit for a long time, so you either need to take it out to play a lot (and re-oil it and alternate mags) or go with a revolver that can sit better. Also, if you are in a courthouse I assume you will have plenty of security provided by law enforcement. Probably sheriff's deputies for courthouse security plus any law enforcement who happens to be there to testify. So, while a gun for self-defense is a good idea (in case a BG acts faster than law enforcement can react), you don't need anything particularly hi-cap- go for class.

Any closer than that and it will foul up faster than Germany took Poland

Actually, Poland did a pretty good job resisting considering her resources. It was France that just got rolled over.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Heaven knows we need more gun friendly judges. As far as your gun on the bench let me start off by saying I have and carry the Sig 239 and love it. Actually have 2 of them one in 40 for me and one in 9 for my wife. With that being said if I were to have a gun in this setting I would want a longer barrel and higher magazine capacity. Personally I would either go with the full size Sig or a Berretta 92 or 96. On the other hand if your balif is a good shot and you want your bench gun to double as your carry gun then stick with the Sig 239 you will not be disapointed.

One other thing if I were in your shoes or robe I dont think I would use the lock box if I had the choice why not keep it under the robe?

One last suggestion if you are a Judge I would check into a federal permit may as well go all the way if you can. Ive never checked into it but something else for you to check out.

Good Luck and Congrats again!

OK

After looking at some of the other posts if you go with a 1911 go straight to the top and buy a Kimber you simply cant go wrong there. Or better yet buy the full sized Kimber for the Lock Box and buy and carry the smaller easier to carry more practicle Sig 239 for under the robe:D Oh and dont forget the Kahr or the Keltec in your planner:D

OK Guys I am really sorry but this is the best thread I have read in about 2 weeks. Just one more word. I thought all Judges had one of those trap doors right in front of the stand with a big red button on his desk. With one of those babies I dont know what you should be worried about.:D

OK IM done

First of all, congrats!

Now, to the gun. Personally, I would put in the lock box exactly what you have been carrying. Glock, Sig, Colt, whatever it is. You want it to be exactly like you have been carrying and training with just in case. Nothing like being in the heat of the moment and not flicking off the safety etc...

Do what makes sense and can save your life, not what looks cool.

Judges actually have a pistol on the bench with them?

Somehow, that restores a bit of my faith in the judiciary.

The plainest, humblest, straightforward, accurate, unbiased, and honest 1911 I could find would be my choice.

Congratulations.

Folks, after serving as a prosecuting attorney for over eleven years, an opportunity has presented itself to me which cannot be turned down. I've been offered a position as a Magistrate, which is essentially an assistant judge. Good-bye badge (and permit-free CCW), hello CCW classes and permit application.

Now, for the fun part, the judge I will work for showed me my courtroom (God that sounds cool), and the ballistc armor in the bench. He also showed me the quick open lock box mounted on the bench for "your Mace or gun." So, we talk guns for a moment, and he confirms that I can keep a gun on the bench, just like all of the other judges and magistrates do. his only instruction was "Make it something with style, not one of those damn Glocks." So, what do you all think? Is a Sig 239 with wood grips stylish, or should I go with the Smith Model 19 with a Hogue wood grip? Or, is this yet another reason to go shopping? I've always been interested in a 1911...

By the way, I'll still spout off around here about legal issues. My attitude just may change a bit about LEO's and the War on Drugs... :D
well, for you i would suggest an Ed Brown executive 1911 .45 . it will be about 2 grand. ohh and by the way...make sure you wear pants and underwear under that robe...:neener: congratulations!!!!!
