Gun for the Girlfriend to use

Hey Delta9 how about a warning next time? The only reason I still have a keyboard is because I already swallowed my coffee before reading. Valuable small parts hanging out in the open :neener:.

Some comments with good intent:
I know 3 women who've had their purse snatched. One of them was with me when it happened. It was over in an instant and the guy ran so fast and far, he could've been on the Olympic track team. It happened so quickly and so unexpectedly that there would have been no time to get a gun out of the purse. They just come up from behind, grab the purse w/one hand and use a one dollar plastic razor knife to cut the strap with the other. It takes a mere second. If a thief is going to get all of your ID, money, credit cards, etc, don't let him have a free gun also. Purse carry is bad mojo.

I've always thought revolvers were ideal for purse carry as they can be fired from within the purse if need be (semiauto would only fire one round before jamming). The lady won't have to face the chance of it being taken from her if the bad guy just thinks she's going after her wallet to hand over.

Kudos to all the guys who said "let her pick." Y'all are absolutely right.

Purse carry is, sometimes, the only option we have. If I wear a lightweight summer dress, there just is no place to put a Kimber Ultra Carry II. For that matter, not even my J-frame works. In 90 degree heat and 60% humidity, jackets aren't an option. In that situation, my purse is what works. There are also those who cannot carry on the waistband due to health issues (not many folks, granted, but there are some).

As to what gun will work for her, certainly the slide issue is important, although usually a woman can learn to rack any slide as long as she's taught a different way to do so. Cross-body works for some (hold the gun in strong hand pointing across the body, grasp the slide with the other hand, push with both hands). For me, as a woman with arthritis in my hands, there are times that holding the grip with my strong side and pulling straight back with my weak is what works best.

More important is the grip. Our different hand size (both breadth and length) makes it extremely difficult for most men to pick up a gun and be able to know that a woman will find it comfortable. My hands are as long as my husband's, but much more slender; so handgun grips that his pinky won't even fit on work fine for me, and are much more comfortable than his full-size 5" 1911.

Take her shopping. If she wants to handle every gun in the place, then she can handle every gun in the place. She'll know when she's found "the one". The guys on this thread that said "I bought X and it didn't work" are object lessons for this central point: she picks what fits her.

Good for you for being helpful, and good luck to both of you in finding just the right CCW for her!
